FoxInTheBirstallBox Posted 18 October 2014 Posted 18 October 2014 Now today just proved it more than anything, we get to the edge of the box and try to pass it to the penalty spot and tap in Now there is nothing wrong with it, when it pays off. We score beautiful goals like that But, I for the life of me don't see why we dont often shoot from distance, not talking 30 yard screamers here but edge of the box stuff We have multiple players who and more than capable! Just wish we wouldnt try and walk it in all the time and maybe it could pay off? Opinions on this?
Unabomber Posted 18 October 2014 Posted 18 October 2014 Haven't heard many of our fans do the "SHOOOOT" chant recently so maybe we should look at ourselves first?
Charl91 Posted 18 October 2014 Posted 18 October 2014 We do try, we had a couple of attempts. They just had players in the way. And then we lose possession, and we concede down the other end.
Bob Weasel Fox Posted 18 October 2014 Posted 18 October 2014 A few of the players need shooting perhaps . . . .

We had a few shots but they made some decent blocks and then there's the Drinkwater and James chances just inside the edge of the box. Their defenders were just as solid as ours are in other matches.
Matt Posted 18 October 2014 Posted 18 October 2014 Never seemed to have problems creating and converting against the bigger teams at the start of the season, I'm sure I read something about us being 2nd (Behind Chelsea) in chances to goals ratio until 3 games ago. Which baffles me why are struggling in 'easier' games that we should be making even more chances and even more shots when in actual fact we're making less chances and shot.

Noo not just today, I mean more in general, this season so far I would prefer a player to try from 20 yards on target than walk it to the box and loose it, we dont seem to make the most of our chances anyway, but creating more chances cant be a bad thing

It almost seems unfair that given our great start and the goals/chances we were producing it's all falling apart a little right now! Maybe that's part of the problem. Maybe the players are thinking like that and although they're 'easier' because it's not a big name club, the performances are still dipping. Plus, I think one big factor would be the way the 'easier' teams set up. They're less attacking compared to the likes of Arsenal and Utd. They focus more on containing and being solid at the back and therefore it's made more difficult for us to create chances against more resolute and tighter defences. In more open games, we flourish and succeed. When we need to break opposition down, there seems to be a mental block on creating ways to carve out opportunities.

Not an expert but I presume that the lesser teams even sit back against us so there are more of them in the way when we shoot ??

Well that was a big fear of mine after such a good start to the season, I mentioned it after the Man Utd win and I got shot down by making the point and it got passed off as a pessimistic comment, I honest beleive this is the issue though, the players need a huge kick up the arse and realise they can't allow themselves to think like this, no games are easy, there are games we have a better chance in but they will not be easy and we need to be on the top of our game treating it as if it was against one of the top teams. I understand your point about less open, less attacking (From both teams) but it's not excuse given the performance's in the last 3 games, we have deserved everything we've got (Infact I don't think we deserved a point against Burnley - Even though we were in a winning position and threw it away last minute I can't say we deserved a point).
Captain... Posted 18 October 2014 Posted 18 October 2014 Yes we need more people shooting from outside the area like De Laet did, nothing bad can come from it...
JadeFalcon Posted 18 October 2014 Posted 18 October 2014 this is imho our major problem, opposing teams have seen what we are capable of and so sit back... we need to put out a team that has a good chance of cutting through them and also more shooting from range i.e a few snapshots to try and catch them off guard... also less of the oofing of the ball up the pitch in a panic, we were really good at taking it to the top teams when we played it out along the ground... i saw too many times the ball get oofed up the pitch by kasper today, just to watch it come straight back at us
FoxInTheBirstallBox Posted 18 October 2014 Author Posted 18 October 2014 The way i look at it is, if you hit it as hard as you can from the edge of the box on target mind it can go straight to the keeper it can also deflect and go in/out for a corner Keeper could block it, again another corner Keeper could even drop it! Theres nothing to loose!
Guest Col city fan Posted 18 October 2014 Posted 18 October 2014 This could be the difference between relegation and survival this season and its an important point. If our strikers don't score, WHERE do our goals come from? Drinkwater, Schlupp, Albrighton, even King... not only do we lack midfield creativity, that quality player to unlock defences consistently, but also enough goals from that area. Could be the difference this.
Guest ttfn Posted 18 October 2014 Posted 18 October 2014 There's no point in shooting unless they're clear shooting chances. To be honest today I didn't think that not shooting was the problem. The problem was the perennial failure to produce shooting opportunities.
