Donut Posted 5 December 2014 Posted 5 December 2014 This thread has shown already and will continue to show the way in which people will interpret stats to make an argument. Rest assured, if Cambiasso had been top of the list, the typical comment would have probably been along the lines of 'there ya go, told ya so'. Because he's not, few will look at the stats and think 'oh, thats interesting, I wasn't expecting that'. Instead, it will be the type of pass that is defended. Yeah, thats true, but the point is valid. Trying to make things happen is more difficult than retaining possession square. If we had a midfield where everyone had 100% pass completion, we could be the most potent team in history, or more likely spend the whole game going sideways. A cross is a hopeful pass with no real target, its just put into a good area for someone to attack. Its completion rate is going to be way down.

Because he's not, few will look at the stats and think 'oh, thats interesting, I wasn't expecting that'. Instead, it will be the type of pass that is defended. Isn't that what statistics are there for though? Some are quite clearcut, like goals per game or goals per time on the field, while others, such as pass success, are open to more interpretation. I'm not going to lie, I was a bit surprised he was lower than a lot of our players and as low as that. Are we seriously saying, though, that Liam Moore, Wes Morgan and Dean Hammond are better passers of the ball than Cambiasso? Pass success has to be interpreted. Sure, Kingy is good at keeping the ball, by far the best in our team. However, how often does he try a through ball, a ball that turns the defence or a ball that really tries to attack the opposition? Could you see someone like Drinkwater playing the pass Mahrez did for our goal on Tuesday? The team need people who will take risks with their passing, as well as those who will help to retain the ball. Again it's about balance. Football is about balance. We haven't found it yet in this league, if we did we would be doing a lot better than we currently are. Not every player needs to make that kind of pass and it's good to have those who can keep possession very well. I thought Cambiasso's pass success rate would be higher, so I am surprised. Doesn't mean I'm now going to think he's rubbish!

Probably but you're used to that by now :xmaslaugh: No, in all seriousness I was surprised but I still think you can't just ignore interpretation of stats. What's your interpretation of it? I did, however, expect King to be top because of the way he plays and the type of role he has when he plays. My main point is that the OP claimed Schlupp is a better passer because he has a higher success rate. I completely disagree and tend to form my own opinion from watching players and matches. No way do I think he is an awful player, like some, just that he lacks the football intelligence that could make him a great player with all his other attributes.

My interpretation is two-fold really. Yep, players that try a better pass will fail more AND, again, fans favourite Esteban might not, just might not, be as good as people make out. Damn..shouldn't have said that..
Narborough_fox Posted 5 December 2014 Posted 5 December 2014 'There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.'

But leave our Esteban alone, will you!
Guest Col city fan Posted 5 December 2014 Posted 5 December 2014 Fair enough. But leave our Esteban alone, will you! Yes...Enough is enough... In all sincerity I'd LOVE to be proven wrong and he play great and we start winning again..genuinely
Claridge Posted 5 December 2014 Posted 5 December 2014 Pretty sure big waz passes wind the loudest, with hamer in second.

Frank_mckenzie Posted 5 December 2014 Posted 5 December 2014 Cambiasso can pass and Jeffery can break people, it's a team game, you need a good mixture
Tielemans63 Posted 5 December 2014 Posted 5 December 2014 I have to be honest, Jeff is probably the first team player I rate the least. To me he just about gets by because the one outstanding attribute he has is unbelievable athleticism - he has an engine most players can only dream of and can recover quickly from mistakes. After that though, there isn't much there for me. He's a decent striker of the ball, a poor passer and a rudimentary defender. He's a bit of a Jack of all trades. I hope he proves me wrong (genuinely) but for me he's a lower end championship player.
MooseBreath Posted 6 December 2014 Posted 6 December 2014 http://www.fourfourtwo.com/statszone/8-2014/matches/755436/player-stats/86417/1_PASS_01#tabs-wrapper-anchor Not great. 8/8 backwards passes 8/16 forward passes Of the successful forward passes, only one was within the 2pm - 4pm angle (ie to in the direction of the goal) and that was a ten yard pass made from just outside his own penalty box. He made a further seven passes towards the goal, and every one failed. He didn't make a single successful pass into the box. Compare with Mahrez who had a quiet day by his standards, he made six successful passes towards the goal and two into the box, including one chance created. Much more attacking endeavour, and still managing to have a pass completion similar to Jeff.

This thing with cambiasso get over it!

Utter gubbins. I'm not hating anyone, simply giving an alternative view to the 'world class' one. And I'd said I'd leave it for now, until yet another daft sod provokes me.If you care to look up, I was praising the man! As I have done on countless occasions. So YOU drop it my son.
ithuriel Posted 6 December 2014 Posted 6 December 2014 Actually he has improved quite a lot, just his shooting that is wildly unpredictable.
Bamba's Babes Posted 6 December 2014 Posted 6 December 2014 The most important test/stat is the eye test. An example is David Nugent. His stats state he scored the most goals in his career last season and was involved in a good portion of our goals. He did not pass the eye test. Vardy passes the eye test but his stats show that he is not as impressive as you'd think.

Pearson Nigel Posted 6 December 2014 Posted 6 December 2014 Jeff any-good? What a question......he is great at any level.......be it.......middle weight, cruise weight or heavy weight ...... He OSA knock out! Seriously he is getting better and better in each game of late......just my opinion. the Force is GENUINELY Stronger with this one : )
