No, it wasn't. It was heading away from the islands, born out by it's bearing and it's position when sunk. If the attack ordered was still going ahead, why was it sunk further west than where it was at the time of being given orders when it was ordered eastward?

So, when doing military patrols in wartime, who do you fill the ship with, other than the military?

IT WAS NOT ORDERED TO GO AWAY, IT WAS ORDERED BACK TOWARD A GRID ZONE WITHIN THE EXCLUSION ZONE.

You're arguing with international reports from an investigation, And with our own intelligence services and those of other nations who confirmed signals that the Belgrano was heading TOWARDS the exclusion zone.

It was a troop carrier, not a patrol boat.

But it was patrolling the Burwood bank section with two other ships.

Correct, it was ordered towards the south east, into attack position. IT THEN HEADED WEST INSTEAD.  :frusty:

Oh the irony!

Based on information that came from an international investigation

That is not what the dossiers released stated.

Stephen Hawking could throw anything that thatchers government released further than anyone could or should trust it. The simple facts are that the junta looked to re-enforce the south of the islands under the fear of British advancement, leading to the belgrano patrolling the burwood bank area, south-west of the islands. HMS destroyer locked onto the belgrano and closed in on it. The junta ordered an attack, telling the belgrano to head to the south east area of the islands, the belgrano was sunk well to the south west of the islands, near the cape of the south american continent.

Were you there? If the govt are lying where are you getting your information from?

As fascinating as the Falklands conversation is, let's get back on topic.

What Attlee achieved with a near bankrupt, war ravaged and broken nation was nothing short of miraculous. The NHS and the Welfare State were two of many achievements that greatly enriched this country. In the time frame, there's no real contender. Sir Clem by a country mile.

Atlee spent the Marshall aid money given/lent to us by America on setting up the welfare state. Germany spent the money on retooling their industry. Germany's economy has performed miracles since the end of the war, based on manufacturing quality products people want to buy, we barely make anything anymore.

I bet if was a ship full of peedos they wouldn't have blown it up.

Agree with the NHS and the way he turned the country around but personally think that the country was in a worse state in 1976-1979 being bailed out by the IMF to stop us going bankrupt etc

The reports released at the time with the coordinates of the sinking, along with the reported intercepted orders.

Simple question - the orders it was given were to meet up with the destroyers on the east, yes? So why did it end up further west? The orders that were intercepted were cause for action in normal circumstances, but given it fled rather than moved into an attack position, clinging to the pre-emptive strike excuse is desperate to say the least.

Another important one was bringing in the right to secondary education for the first time

The german manufacturing sector though is companies like siemens and VW, companies that had been long established prior to the war and products that people will always find use for. Our manufacturing sector was ships and steel, the former a far more niche market than cars, and the latter moving to developing countries such as china. Still, manufacturing was big in this country until Thatcher came in, taking it from a near 7m job industry producing 30% of national income and within her first term seeing a quarter of all manufacturing jobs lost - you can hardly blame the failures of our manufacturing sector on Atlee spending aid money on welfare and health when the sector was in good health for 25 years after he left..

Lying about the belgrano being on the offensive at the time. It had received orders to attack but was retreating.

Our manufacturing industries were propped up by govt subsidies, they'd been dying on there arse since the 60s.

There was plenty of controversy at the time. I don't think it was denied it was outside the exclusion zone.

I thought the Butler Act was 1944? That was what pretty much defined the split between primary and secondary, albeit in the divisive tripartite system.

That being said, it was Wilson's Labour government that introduced the comprehensive system most of of the country has today.

I voted for Atlee after I realised we were talking about Attlee.

As for the Belgrano, I find it interesting that sinking an enemy warship should garner so much controversy. But Thatcher's popularity for causing the Falklands war and then almost losing it is misplaced.
