RedHux Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 Wasn't sure where to ask this so here'll do. What were your thoughts on moving grounds? and now you have are those thoughts different from what you imagined? Filbert street was a ground with it's own unique character and appearance (i especially liked the away "cage" and that bloody massive stand on the left ), do you think the walkers has adequately replaced it? I ask because notts council want this silly world cup thing and are proposing a new stadium. A bowl like stadium, that are very common these days and Forest fans are split between progress, and the sentimentality of the old ground (the walk over trent bridge, the history everyone shares with their own club etc...) and the fact it's a bowl like all the other flat pack type modern stadia (no offence ) (artists impression).
Fox92 Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 I don't think that these new grounds can replace the old ones. The older ones seem to create more atmosphere for some reason, whether it is because you are sitting nearer the pitch I don't know Only 17 so cannot remember Filbert Street that much but it is still better than the Walkers. I don't like it all being one tier (if that's what is it called) I like the grounds which have got more than one tier - Hillsborough, Bramall Lane, The City Ground etc. The gound itself holds more history as well, I know the club has its history but to be still playing on the same ground there from the glory days would be nice. On the Nottingham Forest point, I hope they don't move. The City Ground is a lovely football ground, filled with history - You know the European Cup times with Brain Clough etc. Although the new grounds may look nicer from above or outside when they are on TV etc, there not as nice as the older grounds. Ashton Gate, Elland Road, Hillsborough, Bramall Lane, Home Park are all in our division (apart from Leeds ) and they are all better grounds, well thats what I think anyway
RedHux Posted 17 July 2009 Author Posted 17 July 2009 Definitely. I agree about the two tier thing. Just adds a bit I think. Also I like that each stand has it's own personality so to speak. For example, at Forest we have the Clough stand which has the best views but is a library full of grumbling old men for atmos and I'm not sure bowls work quite like that.
Guest Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 If we could go back to Filbo, as it was, I would do it. No question of a doubt.
Shrenchel Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 Modern football grounds, especially bowls, are the devil's work. In two minds whether Forest should get one. Taken so much shit from Forest fans about our monstrosity that it would almost be worth it for the look on their faces but then again it is a cracking ground and a much better day out than Cov or Derby, dont want to cut off my cock to spite my balls.
davieG Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 Unless your club has any realistic notion of getting into and maintaining a top 10 place in the Premier League and preferably a regular place in Europe you might as well save your money and just improve/extend.
lou Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 If we could go back to Filbo, as it was, I would do it. No question of a doubt. THIS, A MILLION TIMES, THIS!!
Guest Bilo Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 If we could go back to Filbo, as it was, I would do it. No question of a doubt. Agree with this, although I wouldn't have liked to see the atmosphere there die a slow painful death as goal music etc was introduced. Unless your club has any realistic notion of getting into and maintaining a top 10 place in the Premier League and preferably a regular place in Europe you might as well save your money and just improve/extend. This also. Forest are as far away from being in a position to fill such a stadium as they have been since Clough left. The City Ground is more than adequate for a club of their present status, a status that is unlikely to change unless they can find a foreign billionaire from somewhere.
Asha Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 If I were you Red Hux i'd wanna stay put. Actually, as a Leicester fan I'd want you to stay put. These new grounds don't recreate anything like the atmosphere the old grounds did, and as you say there's a lot of sentiment regarding the City Ground, and the walk over Trent Bridge etc. Love the away games at Forest, you moving ground was definately take the edge off that.
breadandcheese Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 As others have said, if I could go back to Filbert Street, I would. Although the facilities were awful, the atmosphere was much better. The same would happen to Forest. I put it down to the nice design of the stadium. In the older stadia, there are sharp disjointed edges and overhangs, where sound waves could bounce off and reverberate back to you. At the Walkers, the sound waves flow down onto the pitch, so it is much harder to create an atmosphere.
Corky Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 If we could go back to Filbo, as it was, I would do it. No question of a doubt. Me too. Used to love my old seat.
Bryn Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 I think it's a shame a compromise can't be found. I think in the next century most clubs are going to move grounds and it's a shame even a little innovation can't go into their design. I think the KC Stadium is the best modern stadium outside of the really big clubs/cities, it's at least quite interesting to look at.

Never move! The finances the club gains will be a short return for the fans who adore an atmosphere on a matchday. These bowls are soul less concrete theatres. There are no memories history, or imagination within the new grounds. Everything good that I remember about Filbert Street were things like the smell, atmosphere, excitement of the fans just to be there, even random things like the scallys on Bentlys Roof and in the nurses flats. The new ground is not IMO even safe as "IF" a fire was to break out those at the top of the tiers would take a long time to get out! I think Filbert Way has been built incorrectly anyway as when we were in the Prem we never sold some of the seats in the West Stand which were in the middle high up, I believe this was because of the ground not meeting the fire regs ? I look forward to going to grounds which have their history & character intact like the ones already mentioned, because of the lack of identity that we have now. Never move! You don't know what you are giving up.
haraven Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 The atmosphere of Filbert Street was fantastic, truly among the best stadiums I've ever visited. However at the end the old lovely ground was pretty darn shaky, and in one way or another we'd have to do some radical stuff. Walkers Stadium is a great looking stadium with top notch facilities, but I miss the Filbert atmosphere from my matches on Walkers, like people have said before - the noise seems less even tho there is more people. Let's get a sound maniac, a batman like expert of noise to come up with some fancy shields to capture the sound better. B) I miss Filbert for what it was, but we are better off at Walkers Stadium today - diplomatically put.
RedHux Posted 17 July 2009 Author Posted 17 July 2009 I think I agree with pretty much everything said. I don't want to move and I don't think we'll be needing 40k seats anytime soon (despite our splashing the cash recently). If we are to move a bowl really isn't the way to go. Especially given what you good folks have said. I don't want to watch my football in a theatre with great facilities and no atmos. That said I thought those designs that were released a while back for the scousers new place looked quite good. A departue from the bowl template and I'd consider it.
Radovan's Caravan Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 I understand that you lost your greatest ever coach because of your old stadium - is this true (the story I heard was that he advised his players to run out backwards facing the main stand because the one in front looked like a 'bus shelter')? A crap stadium = no aspirations, yet you constantly bang on about about wanting to get back into the EPL. You can't have it both ways (unless, of course, you are suffering from 'footie psychosis'). If it's decrepit stadia with open terraces and buckled crash barriers, cow sheds and chicken runs you are after come on down here to Serbia - you won't be disappointed. We will also throw in some disgusting match day food and tank you up with the local poison brew so that you are up for the compulsory dust up with the colourful fascist ultra's. All I ask in return is that Voj plays all its home games at The Walkers Stadium.

All I ask in return is that Voj plays all its home games at The Walkers Stadium. How about developing the ground so that they didn't have to come out backwards, a 4 sided traditional stadium developed over time doesn't automatical mean it's a decrepit stadia with open terraces and buckled crash barriers, cow sheds and chicken runs. In fact the Walkers has more chicken runs in it than Filbert St ever had. The quality of the food has got nothing to do with the stadium, the food at Filbert St was superior in my opinion. It also wouldn't have bankrupted us.

And this. Any club looking at building a new out of town Megadome really should look at all the previous examples of clubs doing it (us, Southampton, Chaventry, Colchester etc.) to see that it really doesn't do you all that good. Soon there'll be so many identikit legolands in this country that there'll scarcely be any away games worth going to.

No, we lost O'Neill because Celtic came in for him and he couldn't refuse the offer. He'd turned down other, supposedly bigger clubs whilst with us, and this one was too good an offer. The "walking out backwards" story was a bit tongue-in-cheek, though he had a point. We were about to build the new stadium when he left the club.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 This thread has reminded me of Family Night Football. City should bring that back.

Fosse Boy Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 This thread has reminded me of Family Night Football.City should bring that back. Damn straight. I remember a game against Villa reserves where they had to open the Filbert Street End.
Corky Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 Damn straight. I remember a game against Villa reserves where they had to open the Filbert Street End. With the orange seats
Matt Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 Filbert Street always was and always will be home, I wouldn't go as far as saying I hate the Walkers, but i'm not keen on it - As all the new grounds i'm not keen on.
Fosse Boy Posted 17 July 2009 Posted 17 July 2009 With the orange seats Don't think my dad would have been too thrilled with the view of the Foxy Ladies from that part of the ground though.
