Louise Posted 28 June 2005 Posted 28 June 2005 http://www.mansfieldtown.premiumtv.co.uk/p...~678640,00.html Good luck to him. But I find it a bit strange... The other youngster joining the stags today on a two year deal, Stephen Dawson from Leicester City has an equally impressive resume. Turning down a renewed offer from Leicester says that a chat with Carlton Palmer and one look at what was on offer at Field Mill was enough to lure the young Irishman away from the championship outfit."Carlton Palmer rang me up saying that he would like to speak to me about coming to Mansfield and I know Peter Shirtliffe from when he was the reserve team coach at Leicester City. So I came down and had a talk with them and a look around the ground and I just said that I want to sign straight away. It looks like an ambitious club that wants to make an honest push for promotion. Like his new team mate he has represented his country at every level upto and including under 2. "I have played for Ireland at all levels and was on the bench against France in the under 21s so I am waiting to get into the starting eleven for the under 21s. and I am hoping that if I can impress the manager here and get into the starting side this will help me break into the Under 21 squad." The modest midfielder has no misconceptions about his role at Field Mill and understands that there is a lot of hard work to be done but believes that he can help the Stags earn promotion this season and he cannot wait to get started. "I am looking forward to playing in front of all the Mansfield Fans. I have heard that they can be very passionate about the football and some crowds in this stadium should create a great atmosphere. I know that there is still a lot of hard work to be done but as I said if I can impress the manager enough to get me in the starting eleven an I believe that we can do well this year." He told the official website this morning. " Promotion is on the cards this year for Mansfield. I was speaking to the Manager and he is very confident and with the players that are coming in we are looking to go straight up but even a play off place would be good" he added
kenny Posted 28 June 2005 Posted 28 June 2005 Sounds like CL was right to release him then, he may still develope into a quality player but if he has signed for Mansfield that says alot about his current level at the moment.

Louise Posted 28 June 2005 Author Posted 28 June 2005 I find it strange that he'd go and work with Peter Shirtliffe again.
Cobbo Posted 28 June 2005 Posted 28 June 2005 where did he work with him at before? 128787
SilverFox Posted 28 June 2005 Posted 28 June 2005 when did he work with him before? 128787 Oh just that little club you support.... Leicester!!!!! He was the youth team coach!

Ric Flair Posted 28 June 2005 Posted 28 June 2005 This is a great move for Dawson, i'm surprised he didn't sign for a club in League One but as he has said Mansfield are a strong team in League Two and i'm sure he'll get them promoted. I'll be keeping an eye out for their results, infact I always have ever since Piper went there on loan. See you in a couple of years Dawson!

Scow Posted 28 June 2005 Posted 28 June 2005 Good luck to him - I'm sure he'll do well for Mansfield as he certainly has the ability.
Hitesh Posted 28 June 2005 Posted 28 June 2005 Yeah...good luck to him. He will get to play regular football and i hope he does well there.

Katy Posted 28 June 2005 Posted 28 June 2005 Tsk I think we are going to seriously regret letting him go in a few years.
Hullfox Posted 28 June 2005 Posted 28 June 2005 No disrespect to the player or his new club but it seems to put a bit of the nonsense spoken earlier into perspective. Some of his fan club were saying he had been linked with Man City. I just wonder if Mansfield were the only club showing an interest so he felt he had to join.

And you can't really call it nonsense if you haven't seen the lad play properly.
Hullfox Posted 28 June 2005 Posted 28 June 2005 Of course I can say it's nonsense. The player left the club and has joined Mansfield Town - you don't need to have watched him to understand that he is no footballing genius. That is not a career move that to me seems forward looking. He has after all signed for Carlton Palmer.
Mad Dog Posted 28 June 2005 Posted 28 June 2005 Guaranteed this will be the last we hear of Dawson. I bet he barely plays for them next season aswell.

Just because you drop down a few leagues when your a youngster doesn't mean a thing. I'm always a believer that quality will always come through in the end, so if Dawson has the talent I believe he has then we'll see him back in the big time within 2 or 3 years. First team football puts you in the shop window, Steve Claridge once said 'I'd rather play first team football for a team struggling in division 4 than sitting in the reserves at a team in division one' Dawson obviously knew he had his work cut out to prove himself to the manager, I mean what more can you do than get man of the match in almost every reserve game you play? Shrewd move for the lad, whether that's nonsense it's very much opinion based. Considering you live in Hull, I very much doubt you ever made the trip down to watch Dawson in the reserves so I can see why you believe it's nonsense. Because I rate the lad, I can see why I think it's not nonsense. If he ****s us over in a few years, will you change your tune?
Ric Flair Posted 28 June 2005 Posted 28 June 2005 Guaranteed this will be the last we hear of Dawson. I bet he barely plays for them next season aswell. 128868 I'll take you up on that bet, it will be the easiest money i'll ever make. £100 says Dawson plays regular;y for Mansfield next season with a £100 double that he becomes a fans favourite and gets alot of praise? Put your money where your mouth is you mug!
Cat Burger Posted 28 June 2005 Posted 28 June 2005 When I first watched him play I knew he was an awesome prospect, but I also knew he would never make it here. The guy WILL have a good career, it won't be on a plate for him though.
