Yes there are lots of examples from history, some quite recent, of multi-ethnic polities falling apart because socioeconomic disparities and declining living standards create tensions between ethnic groups that spill over into violence.

My Sileby-born grandfather was a desert rat in N. Africa. He was captured by Axis troops and spent some time in Italian prisoner of war camps. He escaped and lived with a partisan family in Le Marche until the war was over. We kept in touch with the family and visited them from time to time. Great reading these posts. A whole generation of men with the most remarkable stories to tell, but who rarely wanted to tell them.
