Maybe he didn't play in the important games (unless injures/suspensions required him to start) because the manager recognised he wasn't good enough.

I'd imagine that the club would try and argue that if we need him to be in last year's accounting that the deal was agreed on the 30th but if we need him for this year's accounting that the deal was completed after the 1st. Loophole FC.
