Not really sure what to make of Root being named captain. Obviously he's got bags of experience and he's probably the best we have in terms of building for the 2027 Ashes but I would have preferred to have left him alone and built the team properly by giving the captaincy to someone who can be in the role for 5/6 years. Can't help but think we're going to build a team specifically for the Ashes, not learn anything and be well beaten again.

They're really lost their identity. A little bit like how we did under Rodgers. Their initial success came because they had hungry and talented players. You could put the likes of Botman, Guimaraes , Gordon, Isak, Tonali, Hall and Livramento into pretty much any top team. The problems come when you start to accept a drop in standards by selling players without an equal replacement. Leicester got by for years with selling one key player each summer. Tonali, Guimaraes, Gordon and Isak leaving in a 12 month window is a killer. Especially when none of them have been adequately replaced.

I do like the idea that we play with two super athletic fullbacks that are happy to get forward in McFarlane and Aluko. Obviously we'll start the season with Hamza and Thomas though because that's the sort of thing we'd do.

No, because the money should be spent on a striker. I think we'll get 10-15 goals this season from Chaplin and from Page. The evidence is there in front of you that he isn't a player that improves us. Why do you need us to waste £2m and a full season to understand that?
