I think that's a massive disadvantage. Everton could really pile on the siege mentality and think, let's get back the points stolen from us (that they had earned). In our case we could take a similar stance but there's so much more negativity at the start of the season and we're already behind. Could have a good start to the season and still be bottom which is a hammer blow for confidence. Another reason these deductions aren't fair since they done in such a scattergun approach.

Pretty poor start, probably a hangover from Wembley to an extent and then the FA Cup run took it out of them. Maybe should have done better but they also have some very average players. That's the championship though, you can underperform a little and finish 10 places lower than you should so all in all, 9th is not a bad finish for them even if they wanted playoffs

No we don't. Even our recent teams were much more aggressive that this one last season. It was horrificly inconsistent. Sometimes a high press, other times not. It certainly wouldn't be a hallmark of this team. And he's not obviously talking about that because he says high tempo and high pressure as though they are 2 separate things, 1 often used for attacking play and 1 for defensive. So he's talking s****

Most games where we didn't do that? You don't have 70% possession playing high tempo football, it doesn't work. The idea is patience above all and then you kick into gear when possible. That's the whole possession philosophy? As for defensively, one of the most frustrating aspects was that we did neither consistently. Games like Southampton, the counter pressing was fantastic and there were other occasions but for the majority of the second half of the season we dropped right off but not in the way we did in our title winning season (where we still counter pressed, then went deep), we just seemed in no mans land. Neither deep, nor aggressive. You'd get 1 player pressing on their own and not very effectively. We were far too passive if the plan was to defend our box at all costs and go from there. Not a stick to beat Enzo with as the results clearly show it worked but it's just a horrible misconception about our style of play. Or at least for the second half of the season where the good work on style of play evaporated.

Contract would be agreed last summer. The clause then activated upon the conditions being met (in this case promotion). What you're talking about is an option to buy. That would be agreeing a set price that can be activated at any time by the loaning club but then you still have to agree terms with the loanee. We had one on Yunus but chose not to activate.

Both right. We desperately need that stability this summers of all summers, even if there are plenty of doubts about Enzo. That unity and spirit could be the difference between staying up. But, he's had 1 season in management, and whilst successful, it wasn't a particularly difficult job so he'd be a fool to turn down Chelsea. Even if it goes wrong, it won't affect his reputation too much so I'd hold no I'll feeling towards him if he took the job

The advantage of just being back up means that as a fanbase, we're a bit more open to a riskier appointment. And because of that, there are so many good decent up and coming managers or very good managers at this level (Moyes for example) that we have so many options. Almost every name on here that gets mentioned would be interesting or at absolute worse, not uninspiring. Watch us get some absolute dross now

Glad you said it. Fine to not think he was an elite keeper but there's some on here that don't think he was very good . Aside from his weakness commanding the box (which as he says, isn't such a thing in modern football) and the occasional long shot, I think he was one of the very best in the world. One on Ones he was incredible as were his general reflexes. And look at how many big errors leading to goals he actually made when he was here? There's really not many at all and I'm pretty sure he was consistently at the top of that metric for the PL. To be fair, goalkeeping is probably the one area of football where the players are objectively better than they were 30/40/50 years ago. Obviously the very best will always be the very best but the general standard is ridiculous. There are so many good number 2's and even clubs in League 1/2 have fantastic shot stoppers. Technically the coaching and training has changed an awful lot. And because the shot stopping is so good across the board, the ability to not make big mistakes is what separates the best from the rest. Was linked to Chelsea, Man U and Real at one point, and even if he wouldn't have been the absolute best keeper they could have got, he would have been great for them, no questions.

He's just different. It's not a case of him being bright for a footballer, he's just a genuinely articulate and intelligent man. He's both a born leader and someone who has developed that aspect of his personality. Losing him was always going to be a huge blow, let alone when we didn't have an adequate replacement there. What a fantastic interview and well done to Gary for shutting up and just letting him talk. Listened last night and there's so much in there to unpack! Absolute legend and very close to being my all time favourite because of how he carried himself.

Your talking about 2 completely different things. 1 -The importance of promotion. I don't think anyone has doubted that. That has nothing to do with Enzo's performance. 2 - Enzo's performance. He did well to get promoted of course, again not sure anyone has said other than that. However, the circumstances you're presenting aren't the complete picture. - Leeds and Southampton lost their best players so we were no worse off there and started from a much higher base (something people seem to forget as both those signs were relegation candidates in the Prem, whereas we weren't, even if the decline wasn't a shock). Look at some of the players that didn't make matchday squads on a regular basis and tell me we didn't have a brilliant squad for this level. - Re contracts, basically Wilf and Iheanacho that were a question mark. And even then, they probably needed to play well to get better contracts elsewhere. Vestergaard was absolutely woeful and hadn't played so of course he was going to give everything for his future. On that, the turnaround has been fantastic and Enzo deserves a lot of credit for that as with somebody like Ndidi. - The real pressures only started in the last 3rd of the season and we did not do a go job of blocking that noise out. Interviews with multiple players have revealed that it was the senior players that got together to try and sort the awful form out, not Enzo. Not using that as a stick to beat him with, just presenting the facts. And let's be honest, the results and the performances were dire. 10/11 game stretch that was genuine relegation form. Luckily, we'd done such a good prior to that and showed the resilience. - With that vote, I think many were using it to express some dissatisfaction and that they wouldn't be fussed if he left, rather than outright saying sack him immediately. Problem was the form was dreadful but he also made 0 changes to system throughout the season and was so conservative with his subs. He was genuinely pleased with some of those performances and that was a worry. One thing that really didn't sit well on top of that was that he had done so much great work to change the culture of the club but then he handed Hamza the armband a few days after being done for drink driving (yet another incident involving Hamza). Personally, he's lost so much credibility from that as he should have been dropped and certainly not made captain. - And the most important factor, he had the most expensive squad in the league's history. Other factors or not, he had a ridiculous team for this level and even losing the best players meant he could bring in people like Harry Winks and Coady Coady at this level which is silly. So yes, it was a very easy job. However, it doesn't mean achieving promotion was easy and he definitely deserves credit. I've said it but losing him this summer could be a massive hammer blow. We desperately need the continuity and the unity that he will bring to the squad

Huh? Just about the only thing I've ever seen on here where everyone was in agreement that it was the medium if not long term future of the club at stake, and it really was promotion at all costs
