I think it will be telling whether or not he starts the next game. He is quite clearly the best option at 8 alongside KDH.

Reports, including Percy, say that all the paperwork was signed. The deal collapsed, according to Italian sources, because we realised on the final day on the transfer window, in the evening (after we flew him out and did medical etc), that we did some FFP math wrong and we couldn’t actually afford him. I think that says something about the competency levels in certain parts of our club.

Not to mention the #8 roles are absolutely pivotal to chance creation in our system, they are also expected to score a significant share of the goals arriving in the box on to cut backs. We already needed another 8 even without losing Casadei, imo. Next to no physicality without Ndidi, and next to no engine without KDH. Is pretty concerning, but I do think we have enough to go up. Could see us dropping away and losing out on the title to Southampton though. Id prefer if we had a shortage in literally any other position, ideally we would have a significant shortage of a director of football… but we can’t have everything we want.

That is essentially how it is being reported in Italian press, yes. We “didn’t realise” we had less room that we thought in FFP (until yesterday evening), and that caused the deal to collapse. Screams incompetence, I’d be fuming if I were the manager.

Alves being fit would be a god send now. I was worried about the #8 position before we lost Casadei to be honest. We are a totally different side with KDH, and with Ndidi, but have little behind that. I really like Yunus, but he is a wide player/10 and not a natural 8, but he is the square peg I would put in the round hole until Ndidi is back. Can’t say I’m a huge McAteer fan in general, at 8 or on the wing really, he might make a good wing back in the right system as he works hard. Just don’t think he has got the quality, but would absolutely love to be proven wrong.
