Because the release clause is us saying "if you want him, this is the price and only before that date as after that we don't want to disrupt our squad" - anybody coming in after that date should in theory pay a premium for approaching outside the window we set out.

I might be giving the board a bit too much credit in terms of how badly they would spend that money but I do think any player going for 40m would not sign for a championship team.

I think - I might be incorrect - that release clauses generally need to be paid in one bulk payment. Often teams will haggle over this (offering more money but split into several payments).

Mahrez would probably still be fine in the championship, too. Could maybe squeeze a year out of Kramaric.
