Sheffield Wednesday relegated from Championship

Probably better to read it here - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/ceqv44qxjeno EFL fight a 'credible threat' to future of Sheff Wed 30:00 Media caption, Selling Sheffield Wednesday - watch the story of the club's desperate fight for survival By Dale Johnson Football issues correspondent Published 20 March 2026 465 Comments Sheffield Wednesday supporters thought they had won the war. But another battle has begun. Six months after the fans helped to force the Championship club into administration, ending of the ownership of Dejphon Chansiri, the fight is now with the EFL. "There is a real, credible threat to the future of Sheffield Wednesday," James Silverwood, the vice-chair of the club's Supporters' Trust, told BBC Sport. The row is about how the club comes out of administration. The EFL says it must enforce its rules, but if it does so at the most strict level Silverwood says it would be "excessive and punitive". Wednesday are likely to start next season in League One on -15 points if they fail to come out of administration paying enough to unsecured creditors. There could also be severe spending restrictions over transfer fees and salaries. It could lead to a second season of no hope and another relegation to League Two. Silverwood fears that if the EFL does not show some flexibility the club's preferred bidder, Arise Capital Partners, could walk away. "There is the potential that under those draconian restrictions, Sheffield Wednesday are not investable," Silverwood added. "And if nobody invests in Sheffield Wednesday, then it will be liquidated. We lose over 170 years of football in heritage and history." The clock is ticking for the EFL to find a solution that keeps everyone happy - the rest of the league, the Wednesday supporters and the club's prospective new owners. Wednesday supporters feel they have been repeatedly hammered already, all due to mismanagement by Chansiri. The Thai businessman sold off the club's best players last summer - or simply lost them because he had not paid them - in a desperate attempt to cling on. Relegation from the Championship was a formality before 18 points were deducted over administration and multiple financial breaches by Chansiri, who has been banned from football for three years. The South Yorkshire club were relegated last month, in record time, at the home of their city rivals, Sheffield United. And it could get worse. The Owls are four games from equalling Derby County's all-time record of 36 league matches without a win between 2007 and 2008. There are two more attempts to get a victory at Hillsborough to avoid the ignominy of becoming the first club to go an entire year without a home win. After a takeover bid failed last month, hope arrived with another preferred bidder - Arise Capital Partners, a consortium led by David Storch. It is hoped this might be completed in early May. But the offer to buy the club is just under £20m, which BBC Sport understands when broken down will represent around six pence in the pound to the unsecured creditors - of which Chansiri would be the major beneficiary. It is way short of the 25p in the pound required to avoid a 15-point penalty next season. On top of that the club will face a business plan to limit spending. Proposed EFL punishments 'make it a tough task' The EFL has a problem. It wants Wednesday to come out of administration but needs to be fair to the club's rivals in League One next season. Achieving both is no easy task. The EFL argues that it would send the wrong message if Wednesday could spend freely after coming out of administration, especially without paying a fair amount to creditors. But it is not just about the 15 points. Wednesday cannot pay any kind of transfer fees until the summer of 2027 after sanctions enforced under Chansiri's control. Then the EFL has proposed a total salary ceiling of £7m, with individual player wages capped at £7,000-a-week. The last time the Owls were in League One they had a wage bill of more than double that, at £15.8m. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire told BBC Sport this would put the club "in the bottom half of League One" on wages. "It is probably not dissimilar to clubs such as Bristol Rovers or Lincoln or Cambridge United," Maguire said. "When Derby County were promoted, they had a £17m budget. I'd imagine that the budgets for Birmingham City and Wrexham last season would be far in excess of that. "It's going to make it a tough task. And with a highly likely 15-point penalty even more difficult." Perhaps most crucially, the Owls do not have a functioning team. They would have to try to build a squad without funds and start with that points deduction. "It means that Wednesday would be fishing in a pool which they probably don't want to be in," Maguire added. "There are players in League Two who are being paid more than the Wednesday squad are on at present." -

OptaAnalyst There have been 1,179 long throws into the opposition box in Premier League games this season. Those have brought about just 24 goals - or one goal every 49 long throws. Matches are also being delayed for an average of 10 minutes, 42 seconds just for throw-ins to be taken.

Guy Branston is in Leicester. · Follow So proud of this one! Massive congratulations to Louis Page on his call-up to the England MU18 squad for the upcoming UEFA U19 European Championship qualifiers. I’ve watched Louis put in the work day in and day out, and honestly, the lad has been absolutely amazing this season. Seeing him transition so smoothly into the Leicester City first-team environment has been a joy to watch. To rack up 16 Championship appearances at his age—while still dominating in the U21s and FA Youth Cup—shows exactly the kind of character and talent he possesses. He isn’t just a technical player; he’s got the engine and the heart to match. This England call-up is the perfect reward for all those extra hours on the training pitch and the maturity he’s shown leading the midfield for the Foxes this year. Go and smash it in Croatia, Louis. You’ve earned every bit of this. Celebrating from, Everyone at @gamechanger_fa -

I'd imagine a lot of their multi-story car parks are quite old and falling apart like Lee Circle and maintenance cost must be horrendous.

But at the same time he continues to put in place actions to extend the war like preparing troops. Tomorrow he'll probably say the complete opposite and deny he said it or that it meant we'll continue the war

Amplify Football · Follow Liverpool Women’s latest financial accounts give a really clear snapshot of where the women’s game currently sits financially. The club reported turnover of £6.1m for the year ending May 2025, up 25% on the previous season. Commercial revenue increased by 26% and matchday income more than doubled to £340,000 after the move to St Helens. But one number from the accounts really stands out. The entire Liverpool Women wage bill for players and staff was £3.1m. That is less than the £4.2m earned by the club’s nine directors during the same period. To put the scale of the wider football business into perspective, Liverpool’s men’s team payroll sits at around £428m. There are positive signs. Revenue is growing, attendances are rising and commercial partnerships are increasing. But the numbers also highlight just how early the financial growth of the women’s game still is and how reliant most WSL teams remain on support from their parent clubs. BBC Alexander-Arnold not in 35-man split England squad Split picture graphic of James Garner of Everton, Dominic Calvert Lewin of Leeds and Trent Alexander-Arnold of Real Madrid Image source,Getty Images ByEmily Salley BBC Sport journalist Published 20 March 2026, 08:50 GMT 1191 Comments Updated 3 hours ago Thomas Tuchel said England's upcoming camp is the "last opportunity for players to compete for their ticket" to the World Cup this summer as he named an expanded 35-man squad. It included two uncapped players in Everton midfielder James Garner and Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele. The extended squad saw recalls for Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo, while AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori is back for the first time since October 2023. Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin returns after more than five years since his last call-up and Dominic Solanke makes his first squad since October 2024. But there is no place in Tuchel's squad for Real Madrid full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott or Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins. Chelsea's Reece James and Trevoh Chalobah, who were named in the last squad, miss out through injury. The Three Lions continue their World Cup preparations with friendlies at Wembley Stadium against Uruguay on 27 March and Japan on 31 March. "It's our the last camp [before the World Cup]. The last opportunity to impress and the last opportunity for players to compete for their ticket," Tuchel said. Tuchel said to "get the best out of this camp" a decision was made to split it into two camps, with 11 players joining the squad after the Uruguay game. The 11 players are: Dean Henderson, Dan Burn, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Nico O'Reilly, Elliot Anderson, Declan Rice, Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka. "These guys have played 3,500 minutes, some 4,000 minutes. More important than the pure number of minutes is some of these guys have played more minutes than the whole of last season," Tuchel said. "All of these players have contributed in September, October and November. They have credit with me. To give them a break mentally and physically, we will benefit from it." Teams must submit their final World Cup squads by Saturday, 30 May. Players have to push for their World Cup ticket - Tuchel When asked about Alexander-Arnold's omission, Tuchel said it was a "tough decision" to leave out the former Liverpool right-back. "I know what Trent can give us and I decided still to stick to the players with us," the England boss added. He said players like Tino Livramento, Djed Spence and Jarell Quansah offered "a slightly different profile" to Alexander-Arnold. Tuchel also explained it was a similar situation for Watkins, with Calvert-Lewin and Solanke selected over the Villa striker. "I want to have a look at two other players to get a better picture and have a clearer opinion," the 52-year-old German said. Alexander-Arnold's Real Madrid team-mate Jude Bellingham is included in the squad despite not playing for the club since early February because of a hamstring injury, while defender John Stones has made just two Manchester City appearances since early December. Garner, who has started every game for the Toffees this season, said he was "really happy" about his first senior call-up. "I was very confident it was going to come just on the basis that I've had a good season, so I finally got my chance and it's a dream come true," he said in a video posted on Everton's X account. Tuchel said: "A bit of an underrated player. He plays several positions. I've been impressed, watching him live, by his work rate and physicality. He is a fantastic team-mate and does a lot to help those around him." Meanwhile, England have said Steele, who has not made a single Premier League appearance for Brighton this season, is named "with the prospect of him joining the World Cup squad as a training goalkeeper during the summer". The call-up is the 35-year-old's first at senior international level since he represented Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics in London. Tuchel was also asked about Arsenal teenager Max Dowman, who became the youngest scorer in Premier League history earlier this month. The England boss described the 16-year-old as an "outstanding talent" but said there was "no need to call him up now and increase the pressure".

Daytrippin' Beatles Magazine · Follow In February 2026, the new documentary from Beatles author and historian, Mark Lewisohn, called Evolver 62 was released. As someone who studies The Beatles' history, this was an intriguing movie to watch. I remember seeing these lectures advertised in the past in the UK, and wished he would bring them to the US. Of course, Mark is the renowned Beatles historian and author who has written a number of Beatles' books. The most well-known is his 2013 book, Tune In: The Beatles: All These Years, Volume 1, which covered in great detail the history of The Fab Four from birth through 1962. Evolver 62 (the title is a clever play on words of the Revolver album suggesting the evolution of the Beatles in 1962) is a 108-minute university-style lecture interspersed with Lewisohn visiting famous Beatles locations, or showcasing the rarest of rare Beatles memorabilia (which he happens to own). Beatles's Fan Forever · Follow As a dedicated Beatles fan, delving into the peak years of Beatlemania always unearths fascinating intersections between rock and roll and classic Hollywood glamour. One of the most intriguing, yet often overlooked, footnotes in the band’s history is the brief flurry of rumors surrounding Ringo Starr and the iconic 1960s sex symbol, Ann-Margret. To understand the gravity of this rumor, one must first recognize the sheer magnitude of Ringo’s popularity in the United States. While John and Paul were the primary songwriters, 1964 America was fully in the grip of "Ringo-mania." He received the most fan mail, and his unassuming, sad-eyed charm made him incredibly magnetic. During this era, Ann-Margret was the undisputed "It Girl" of Hollywood. Fresh off her electrifying performance opposite Elvis Presley in Viva Las Vegas, she was a captivating blend of immense talent and breathtaking beauty. When The Beatles conquered America and began brushing shoulders with Hollywood’s elite, the press was desperate to link the biggest rock stars in the world with the silver screen's most desirable women. Rumors began to circulate that Ringo and Ann-Margret had caught each other's eye, sparking whispers of a secret date and a fleeting, flirtatious romance. For us fans, this rumor is less about scandalous gossip and more about what it represented. It highlighted Ringo’s often-underestimated appeal. He was not just the quirky drummer in the back; he possessed a genuine, understated charisma that could reportedly capture the attention of a woman who had the biggest stars in the world knocking at her door. While neither party ever confirmed a deeply serious relationship—often laughing it off as media exaggeration or a brief, friendly encounter—the visual of the working-class lad from the Dingle charming Hollywood’s ultimate golden girl remains a brilliant snapshot of the 1960s. It represents a brief, magical moment when the British Invasion and classical Hollywood royalty collided, leaving fans forever curious about what really happened behind closed doors.
