  1. Gal Oya National Park In Sri Lanka is famous for it’s lake swimming Elephants.
  2. Only around 9% of plastic worldwide has ever been recycled 😳
  3. Noticed that quite a few Damselflies have emerged this week, watched the first Dragonfly emerge yesterday and managed get a photo this morning. Male Broad Bodied Chaser.
  4. Ichneumon Wasp by the looks. Completely harmless.
  5. Apologies, I misinterprated your words, you sounded as though you were saying that that particular rationale justified the ends. This sort of proves a point though, why can some people focus on the symbolism of a tree over the destruction of a rainforest (and every other ecosystem we come across) when it's so blatantly obvious that the latter is already wreaking havoc... Actually, I'm not going to pursue this topic anymore, I've seen @leicsmac debate in a really diplomatic way (with science backed facts) and people still deny or downplay it.
  6. The rationale for these is purely profit. The science is out there and very clear. One of these is a massive contributor to global warming, the other is a tree. Science not symbolism.
  7. I visited a part of the Amazonian rain forest in the ‘80s - it no longer exists, it’s one huuuge cattle ranch now. Probably supplying some fast food chain for burgers.
  8. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/may/10/reform-uk-councillors-face-allegations-sharing-far-right-islamophobic-content DOesN’t MeAn We’Re RacIstS tHoUGh…
  9. I’ve noticed that the amount of people upset over the sycamore gap tree is massively more vocal than the deforestation going on worldwide. More than five million hectares are lost annually. It seems that symbolism is more important than climate change for the majority 🤷🏻

    VE Day

Grandad served in WW2 alongside his brothers. Grandad survived, 3 brothers killed Traced great uncles/uncles who were killed in the Great War and WW2 and several are named at the Thiepval Memorial Cemetery and Ypres. If you’ve never been to the French war memorials and cemeteries and have even a faint interest, then do it. Incredibly moving.
  11. I had one of these at a previous house. Fully mature with stunning flowers. Fruit is barely edible/bland but makes a good conserve. Lovely ornamental tree 👍
  12. Sounds like you need low maintenance shrubs and low ground covering plants. Do you have any membrane on the bed? You probably don’t want to be constantly weeding or pruning I presume. Don’t forget the pollinators 👍
  13. All ready to go.
  14. Last time I was there I watched a pair feeding a very fat Cuckoo…
  15. Green Woodpecker, also known as the yaffle bird 👍
  16. I have a great site for Chough and nearly always see Ring Ouzel and Peregrine there too.
  17. Just dug out one of my moth traps, first go this year.
  18. I miss @Daggers acerbic wit, dog/bike photos/music. Hope you’re doing ok 👍
  19. Now have five Swallow nests, all brooding eggs. Haven’t lost any more nests to predators so far and several new ones have been built and now have eggs. Most of the Rooks have fledged, just one or two flapping about in the top of the tree, training their wings for the first flight. Badgers and foxes very active from evening to dawn and I’ve uncovered a single rabbit warren which I’m going to put a camera on, Granddaughter wants to see baby bunnies 😂. Trees are almost all in leaf, Laburnum full of flowers and fruit trees covered in blossom. I love this time of year (although we could do with some rain).
  20. I'm banned from the general news thread and it seems I'm not allowed to talk about the Middle East genocide but man, Israel are inflicting totally unchecked torture and slow death by starvation, alongside the usual bombing/shooting. Next to no news channels are reporting on it. World leaders are ignoring it. Aid workers reporting that it's the worst they've seen (and they've worked in places like CAR, Sudan, Yemen etc.) Devastating.
  21. It’s the lack of and closures of public conveniences that’s the problem
