Confident

To be fair Nugent never fancied himself a penalty taker until last season when he took it upon himself. If Ulloa is confident in himself then don't see why he shouldn't be the first choice.

I don't know if there are any stats to back this up but I always think Nugent misses more often when there is more pressure to score the penalty.

Everyone does

Even in shootouts something like 40% of penalties are scored in penalties when the taker has to score to remain in the shootout, but 90% are scored when the taker has to score to win

RVP, Rooney and the worlds best players miss high penalty pressure penalties where to score is to get a result alongside Nugent, even Bayern Munich missed loads in the big shootout against Dortmund the other week

The person who should take a penalty IMO, is the person who fancies it, if they're in the right frame of mind. Eg no Knocky in that Watford game, but Knocky at other times would be fine

I think penalties are a lottery. 8 times out of ten they go in. The only thing I want is whoever takes it to be confident. The best players including Messi have missed numerous penalties, so it's more about a confidence thing than ability.

I think it's a good thing we have two players who are happy to step up and take them.

But if you base it purely on this season's stats, Nugent has scored 1/2 and Ulloa has scored 2/2. On this seasons form Ulloa could arguably stake a claim to be taking them but at the same time Nugent was successful from the spot last season, took the West Ham penalty when Ulloa was playing and I can't see Pearson relieving him penalty duties because Ulloa has scored 2 for us. I have no doubt Nugent would have stepped up on Saturday had he been on the pitch.

Nugent has missed too many imo. He's not confident enough simple as that.

I think people are being incredibly unfair on Nuge here. The only reason he's seen to miss penalties more often is because of the absurd amount that we were (on the whole, rightfully) awarded last season. He scored 10 and missed 3 - a success rate of 77%. That's a plenty good enough conversion rate, but see anyone miss 3 in a season and you're going to have your doubts.

This year it's been 50% - 1 scored and 1 missed - but had he taken and scored the two when he was off-field, that would be up to 75%.

In fact, if you wanted food for thought on that rate of conversion, according to this chart, Nuge is more or less at the national average as of 2012 on last year's showing. He's on par with Alan Shearer and Michael Owen, and better at taking penalties than the likes of Robin van Persie, Steven Gerrard and Wayne Rooney.

Nothing like cold hard facts, stats & charts

Can't see any of them missing 4 penalties during a single championship season.
