Sound system advice

Recommended Posts

So my trusty old reliable sound system, triple cd changer with twin cassette decks, FM and AM radio has packed up and I need something to crank out some banging tunes on.

I've not bought a sound system for a long time, so I have no idea what to look for, I have a DAB aerial socket in my wall as the reception in my flat is crap and I want some sort of Bluetooth, airplay, remote control from phone gubbins, with some nice speakers that I can hook the old telly box up to, again as wire free as possible but without breaking the bank.

So what are all the cool kids buying at the moment? What should I be looking for, what should I be avoiding?

Whoever gives me the best advice I will print out their profile pic and stick it to the System I buy (please be buzzer_b).

I haven't a clue what the cool kids are buying, but whatever it is it's probably best avoided.  I'm guessing that you don't need to play CDs anymore?

A one box system that does most of what you want would be something like this http://www.denon.co.uk/uk/product/compactsystems/minimicro/draf109dabalthough confusingly it's not obvious that you can buy this on its own and I cannot find a price for it.  It's got AUX in, so you should be able to play your telly through it, but I'm not an AV man so I don't know if this is still the best solution.

I know sod all about internet radio, but if you've got that does it render the need to have a DAB tuner obsolete?

I've asked more questions than I've answered.  It won't be Foxy Peter gracing the frontage of your new kit, that's for sure

I do still want to play CDs, as I have a lot of them, and can't be arsed to digitise them all, but I can live without a tape deck.

Something like this looks like it would do the job,

but I don't know if that is good value for money, wasn't really planning on spending that much without speakers, but then I don't want to buy some cheapo shit.

I'd argue it's worth spending at least that, but Denon's good kit and with a decent pair of speakers not needing to be silly money I think you'd be thrilled with the results.

The only downside of that one (given your requirements) you've referred to is that if you want to play from your Ipod or whatever you have to physically link the two, although being old fashioned I prefer the stability of a direct link

I bought a 2.1 speaker system by Edifier to plug into my PC (the m3200 if anyone's interested - got them with the blue lining obviously).  I only bought it because it was cheap by comparison with other 2.1 set-ups and not only have they been surprisingly good quality with a genuinely accurate volume control knob (always get annoyed with shitty sliders which make no difference until suddenly it's so loud your ears are bleeding), but they're still going strong 6 years into life and I feel no need whatsoever to switch up.  I don't think they do CD players though, but you reminded me of it so I thought I'd give them a mention in case anyone's looking for quality speakers which look good, last for a decent time, and don't break the bank.  Paid about £40 for them all that time ago.
