Merging Cultures Posted 17 December 2015 Posted 17 December 2015 I couldn't find a suitable thread for this, please merge if there is another general World News thread. I'll start with news from Burundi. It's really shocking and hits me quite hard. I was last there in January and we have friends there. Over the weekend some friends of ours had six bullets hit their house, near their lounge where their two children were watching TV. The US government in the last few days has told all Americans to leave. They have headed to Tanzania. A consultant I worked with earlier in the year is trying to leave for Europe. He can't go to the surrounding countries because he is a Tutsi. A friend of his was dragged from his house and killed last Friday. He fears the same. In Rwanda, Burundi refugee kids and young men are being recruited to join ethnic militia groups. Everyone in country is saying they are on the verge of civil war. This will leak out across the region and has the potential for another genocide. At the moment, the world is sitting back and waiting. Hopefully we learnt from Rwanda.
Darkon84 Posted 17 December 2015 Posted 17 December 2015 The whole region always has something bubbling away under the surface, ready to boil over in to something terrible again. Hope you and the family (and the dog) stay safe mate.

It would be nice if people in the Balkans could be this passionate about stamping out corruption, tax evasion etc instead of pointless nationalism.

I think you could extend that sentiment to the greater part of the world.

Merging Cultures Posted 19 April 2016 Author Posted 19 April 2016 Riots in Lusaka yesterday and today. They allegedly started because people were protesting that some "folenaz" (foreigners!!) were released from custody. Rumour was they were arrested because they were involved in a spate of ritualistic killings. So people started attacking businesses owned by other African nationalities. Now the riots have spread and people are just looting and it is being blamed on people being poor. Difficult times ahead.
Merging Cultures Posted 18 May 2016 Author Posted 18 May 2016 This is quite entertaining: https://youtu.be/yumqWPmxf8I The EFF are a radical party in RSA politics, today during the questioning of the President's budget, they got kicked out (again!) for disruption. They make very good points, and do it in a way that really shows how ineffective democracy is in South Africa. I don't like their politics myself, but they are effective in disruption and highlighting how rubbish the ANC and Zuma are.

Wymsey Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 Briton Lauri Love, accused of hacking into US government systems, is to be extridated to the US for a trial. He, who has Aspergers and mental health issues, previously said he'll worry about his well-being if he was to be sent to a US jail. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-suffolk-37385201 Hope the US court give some consideration with his diagnosis etc and give a fair trial for him. - A worrying development in the search for Ben Needham in Kos, Greece, with reports that he was crushed by a digger. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-37383069
Finnegan Posted 16 September 2016 Posted 16 September 2016 White police officer in Columbus Ohio has shot dead a thirteen year old black boy allegedly carrying a BB gun. Here we go again.

I think back then it was implied it was his Grandfather, but now they seem to be saying one of the builders, who's recent died, hit him with a digger and hid the body. If it's true I really feel for the family, what could have been an unfortunate accident has turned into 25 years of pain and suffering because somebody didn't dare face up to their terrible mistake.
