Leicester City soccer sensation Jamie Vardy is set to add a new string to his bow when he takes on the role of Albert Steptoe in a new reimagining of the hit 70s sitcom, Steptoe and Son.

The Mercury has learned that the 29-year-old striker has received an offer from an independent production company to star in a one-off episode – due to be broadcast around the time of the 2018 World Cup – a remake of a 1978 radio sketch show called Good Luck Scotland.

The original Galton and Simpson story features Albert's wish to go to Argentina to watch Scotland play in the 1978 World Cup.

However, the modern day retelling brings the story into the present and has Albert (Vardy) vying to make it to Brazil in 2014 to see England's tournament campaign – with hilarious consequences.

Filming is set to start next summer.

Media marketing PR executive Felicity Whistles, from High Five Productions, said: "Going forward we are really overjoyed that Jamie has agreed to take part.

"He is the first person to be cast and I couldn't think of a more perfect actor for the part.

"Next, we're looking for candidates for Harold Steptoe.

"So far, we've only approached Wayne Rooney – but we haven't had a reply."

It is not the first time Vardy has appeared on screen.

In 1996, aged nine, he stared in short television advert for Allied Dunbar.

The Mercury contact his agent for a comment but has not had a response.

I saw them just after xmas, the episode where escaped prisoners force their way into the house.

The prisoners demand the keys for their car...

Harold tells them that they have no car, but can take the carthorse.

Prisoner..' a 'horse, we cant make a getaway on a 'orse.

Harold..'why not Dick Turpin did..??!!'

After wednesdays match, its funny but as I watched the players leave the field.

I thought, jesus Vardy looks like Albert Steptoe...William Brambell must have spent

some time travelling around Sheffield ( maybe Bi.).
