The Cornish Pasty Conundrum

Recommended Posts

I think this deserves a separate thread !

The Cornish Pasty is protected under European Law

Which means The term "Cornish pasty" has been given protected status by the European Commission, only pasties made in Cornwall from a traditional recipe can now be called "Cornish pasties" The Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status means "genuine" Cornish pasties will now be stamped with a special logo.

does this mean anybody in EU will be able to make them and pass them off as the real thing now???

Same for melton pork pies ? Stilton cheese? Etc....

Can anyone think of others ?

If we are out we can't surely rely on the system for protection !

I believe that was one area of difficulty with TTIP because the American's had their own 'Feta Cheese'.

It's the Scots that could lose out big time - Whisky and Salmon. Whisky especially, there's masses of knock off supposed Scottish Whisky produced in Asia.

I'm starting to make Harborough Parmasan !

Crotch scrapings will get me started lol LOL

What does this mean for my "Sileby Sausage"?

Wiener

On the other hand I suppose a UK firm could sell fizzy wine as champagne, or Bernard Matthews start producing Parma ham

We could sell to ourselves I believe and other non UK locations !

Let me guess , cheese and onion is your fav pasty ?

Yes that is correct. The two ingredients compliment each other superbly.

steak & kidney > cheese & onion

Well I personally disagree. Steak and Kidney is of course the safe option. However, I like to let the boat out a little and go for a Cheese and Onion which I feel has been a very rewarding decision since I made the switch in 2011.

What prompted the change cheese ?

Have you a preferred brand ?

And shortcrust or puff pastry ?

steak & kidney > cheese & onion

Guinness ,Stilton and steak > steak and kidney

I just felt the switch was necessary, nothing prompted it. I do not have a preferred brand as most of the pasties I buy are from my local chip shop or at the football. Of course I prefer puff pastry.

Interesting fact: The Upper Peninsula of Michigan has a large population directly descended from Cornish immigrants who moved to the region to work the iron ore mines. As a result, the pasty is a tremendously popular regional food item - the other immigrant populations of the region (Finns and Swedes, mainly) adopted it and there are countless variations on the traditional recipes to be found.

I love cornish pasties.

There is no such thing as a cheese and anything Cornish Pasty.

I miss them so much living in a warm country.

Well I guess the whole point of brexit is that British Law will supersede any E.U law so they'll just have to apply to a British court if they want to keep their protected status...

A British court which can only stop other British companies but have no sway over continental companies making fake Cornish Pasties.

But being just under British law, we'd have more control over what comes into the country..

Honestly, who cares? Foreigners can still make and sell pasties, just not call them Cornish, big deal. I doubt many people changed their buying habits on just a name.
