Seriously it's embarrassing that post , what has the gay community got to do with football and why empower them ? Football is sport not a political movement , we don't empower Muslim fans or blind fans or American fans or hetrosexual fans why do gay people need to feel empowered by football ? honestly the Internet is a dangerous medium for some people to use.
Izzy Posted 26 November 2016 Posted 26 November 2016 I blame our players wearing the rainbow laces for how shite they played today. There can be no other explanation..
Wymsey Posted 26 November 2016 Posted 26 November 2016 It's 2016, and there's no better opportunity to make everyone from all backgrounds/personality preference feel like everyone else in supporting their football club - certainly the powerful presence of social media and also at a time when people (well, some it seems at least) are beginning to realise respecting one another in society is required for everyone to move forward together and not leave anyone behind and feel vulnerable and unhappy in feeling victimised in what they want to do in their spare time.
urban.spaceman Posted 26 November 2016 Posted 26 November 2016 How did you go from this: On 25/11/2016 at 15:54, GaelicFox said: Actually that's a difference perspective and and I'll accept as fair comment About this: On 25/11/2016 at 15:44, urban.spaceman said: Coming out can still be a big deal to individuals though so I don't think it's fair to begrudge them that. In many cases it's extremely courageous - a friend of mine is a teacher and she had a 14 year old student come to her for advice because his parents are devoutly religious and have said they'd rather he was dead than gay because of what was written in their obscene and stupid little book. That's the sort of person that prominent gay footballer would be a great role model to. I don't think anyone is trying to force anyone out of the closet - "outing" someone against their will or consent is definitely the wrong way to go about it. I do however see it as an attempt to improve the sport to make it a more accepting environment, which is definitely getting there - the Pride supporters clubs are a big step forwards. The main problem I can see is the media attention they would get. I doubt there are many that would want all scrutiny from the press about their private life when all they want to do is play football. In less than 24 hours? As I said in my original post, it's not necessarily about the footballers themselves coming out - it's about the LGBT community and the wider influence it would have. Like a prominent footballing role model for the 14 year old British child who, if he were to come out to his family and wider Muslim community, would be doing so at the risk of his life? Go and look at our Facebook page now, there are hundreds of (presumably) Algerians bombarding the club's Rainbow posts with vomit/angry emojis, pleading with Slimani and Mahrez to leave the club, proclaiming their disgust at the club's stance with Stonewall - even a couple of comments quite close to death threats. These sorts of people that are the exact reason we should be standing loudly and proudly with Stonewall in stamping this shit out. Given the rise in our profile recently I think we have a duty to do this on behalf of everyone whose sexuality puts them at risk of persecution and murder in their own communities and countries (which is currently millions of people). 4 hours ago, GaelicFox said: honestly the Internet is a dangerous medium for some people to use.
