I don't think this is unusual and I've spent a lot of time over the last couple of years working on rebalancing my guitar relationship in favour of the latter!

I used to have an Epiphone Casino with P90s, but whilst it was a very beautiful thing its neck was just too narrow for my big daft hands so I flogged it to my mate

Dream of having big daft hands 😂

I bought an Epiphone Les Paul earlier this year. I took it to a Luthier to just get the initial setup checked, but the strings now seems to buzz. I think maybe he’s set the action too low for my shit playing technique.

Is it safe for me to fiddle around with or am I likely to do any permanent damage? I was thinking I’d have a go, might learn something. Take it to another luthier if I balls it up.

Generally I find it much harder to play than my strat. The neck seems fatter particularly nearer the bridge and doesn’t suit my short fingers.

I'd ask the luthier to readjust, probably won't charge as it's a simple task...and they normally ask your preference re string height prior to the work or on collection. Failing that have a tinker, you won't do any permanent damage as it's designed to be altered. The worst you would do is knock out the intonation (possibly) 🤔

I’d go back to the luthier with feedback and he will make adjustments.
I only play acoustic now but always go back to the same luthier for initial setup.
I’ve messed around myself but it’s so hit and miss that I just go back to him.
Good luck.

Not sure I really trust him to be honest. Probably give someone else a go. Might have a fiddle anyway before doing so. I’d like to learn a bit more.

Dan is ace.

He likes a low action but when the one he did for he was a bit buzzy, he just made some adjustments while I sat with him, kept passing the guitar back to me so I could have a quick go and identify any sounds I didn't like and before you know it, all good

Yep, he does exactly the same with me. He won't let you leave with a guitar you aren't happy with. Top Chap.  Geographically Inaccessible though he may be to @WigstonWanderer☹️

There are a ton of tutorials on how to do your own set up on YouTube. I've done my electrics loads of times. Wouldn't do an acoustic, mind.

You can buy "set up kits" online with all the tools you'll ever need.

Unless your neck needs a shim, or the guitar is WAAAY off, adjusting the truss rods, saddles, bridge etc. to get the right action is doable IMO.

Once a luthier does a proper set up it should be pretty easy to maintain for years.

What do we think? Reckon this will look good in the corner gathering dust?

Never going to own a house so no point in trying to save for one.

Got a little work bonus so looking at a Gibbons Les Paul Special with P90s for that special toan.

My lady finds my man cave reprehensible so she probably won’t notice a blue one appearing

So I bought some guitar tools including some from MusicNomad and followed instructions from their guy on YouTube and I seem to have fixed the string buzzing problem on my Epiphone Les Paul. Basically the action was too low and there was insufficient neck relief.

Of course it’s possible that the luthier I took it to originally mistook me for someone who can actually play the guitar and set the action accordingly, but I honestly think he just got it plain wrong lol

Anyway, I’m glad I had a go and it should save me money in the future as I think I can do most of the easier stuff myself now.

Excellent. Most of the stuff on guitar set up is relatively simple, you do need decent tools and preferably jig/clamps which make the job far easier. During lockdown I converted a left handed Taylor acoustic to right hand, took me ages as I was scared of wrecking it. It plays beautifully, Daughter stole it and it’s her go to guitar now…

Fortunately I didn’t have to do too much, so nowhere near what you’ve done. I checked the radius of the strings and it seemed near enough so didn’t have to do any filing. Just as well as a set of proper files apparently costs about AU$400.

Any Luthiers on here? I'm have trouble with my 'tone' 🤔

Action looks like it could be a little low.

You might want to adjust the neck to compensate.

An old mate of mine were in a band together when we were teenagers, and thought it would be a laugh to re-record one of the demos we recorded around the early 2000s as a fun project.

I've used amp sims for a while now, mainly Waves GTR3 but I used it as an excuse to buy Amplitube 5.

It's absolutely INCREDIBLE. I'll never use my amp again! Anyone else used it? The tonal possibilities are absolutely endless.
