Picked up my old bass to show my son yesterday, and it didn't work when plugged into the amp...

Well, there's my next project.

This was my first ever musical instrument. Have had it for more than half of my life now (got it when I was about 16), and could never bear to part with it. I think it was a Westfield bass. Changed the neck on it years ago, and added a Seymour Duncan pickup.

Peeled the old stickers off of it, and took it to pieces. Now just need to figure out what to do with it.

Will obviously rewire. May look at a new bridge. Will sand it and give it a brand spanking new paint job. Get it a new set of Ernie Ball Super Slinky strings. Voila.

Thinking of going for a hot pink coat, with a surf green over the top. Then will sand through so that the pink (and maybe even some of the bare wood) pops through from beneath.

Flatwounds, you know it makes sense.

Saturday's semi impulse purchase (in that I've wanted one for ages and just decided to order one today for no particular reason) is a TC Electronics Magus Pro distortion pedal. Basically the circuitry from a RAT and TurboRAT in one little case (so have had to buy a power supply as well as it's too diddy to take a battery).

Will report back to let you know if it's any good

I imagine you're not allowed to flog stuff on here, so I'm DEFINITELY NOT selling a Seymour Duncan 59 neck Humbucker which is surplus to requirements and I'll cheerily let go for less than they sell for on Reverb.

DM me if interested before this gets deleted, as if this particular thread gets moderated

Not got the pedal yet but the cheapo power supply arrived so tried it out with my two existing pedals. Buzzes like a swarm of mozzies, FML.

Sending back and ordered a higher quality one with isolated outputs, costing 3 times the price. Saturday morning semi impulse buy now getting quite expensive

Spent a good hour and 40 minutes sanding the black finish off the body yesterday. Has left a nice-looking piece of wood underneath. Almost a shame to spray it hot pink. Almost.

Is translucent pink varnish not a thing? Or a pink stain?

The more expensive one is fine. One of those rare instances where you actually get what you pay for

Probably is, but in this instance I'm going for something like this.

Oh, cool, that is going to look ace.

I used to be a bit sniffy about artificially relic'd stuff and then I thought, what the heck does it matter? If you can have something look exactly how you want, just go for it

Haven't updated on my P-Bass for a while, but it's mostly because I've been slowly progressing. Have finally decided to go with Olympic White over Shell Pink and pink glitter. Final coat of white went on yesterday, and have sanded through to the pink and the wood this evening. About ready for its clear coat on top, now.

Are you doing clear coat over the whole thing to protect it, or are you going to relic that too in some way?

Clear coat to protect and give it a good shine.

I've had a friend 3D-print me off some pink pick-up covers, and am awaiting the pickguard to be delivered before I can start building it.

Starting to get that "new guitar" itch again. I don't know why because I'm shit and I don't play half as much as I used to. I think I prefer guitars to actually playing guitars. lol

I've never owned a Gibson. Or a t-style guitar. I'd love either.

Been pining over something with a P-90 in it like a Les Paul Jr, or double-cut, but they're so fvcking expensive.

Was it you @Dr Marco who posted about owning a melody maker? What's it like?

I don't think this is unusual and I've spent a lot of time over the last couple of years working on rebalancing my guitar relationship in favour of the latter!

I used to have an Epiphone Casino with P90s, but whilst it was a very beautiful thing its neck was just too narrow for my big daft hands so I flogged it to my mate

I go through phases TBH, but at least I’m playing and new guitars always help with that! (Trying to rationalise here)

I’ve considered an Epiphone but I already own one, and feel like I want an upgrade - problem is I don’t really want to spend Gibson money.

Epiphones used to be considered budget, but I saw the new Joe Bonamassa signature SG for £1,500 recently. lol

Even my G-400 custom which I bought new for less than £300 IIRC from Academy Of Sound 20 years ago is now £600+ second hand.

Guitar prices are wild.

I try not to buy things because they're on sale. That being said this thing has been taunting me all week. Just go back to the normal price already. I have an excel spreadsheet of like 50 pedals and 8 amps I'd like to own one day but that's just supposed to be like a silly thing.

Just buy it. If the wife objects, just point to her shoes and handbags collection 😂

I bought an Epiphone Les Paul earlier this year. I took it to a Luthier to just get the initial setup checked, but the strings now seems to buzz. I think maybe he’s set the action too low for my shit playing technique.

Is it safe for me to fiddle around with or am I likely to do any permanent damage? I was thinking I’d have a go, might learn something. Take it to another luthier if I balls it up.

Generally I find it much harder to play than my strat. The neck seems fatter particularly nearer the bridge and doesn’t suit my short fingers.
