Schmeichel - 6 - Didn't have much to do.

Simpson - 8 - Thought he was superb. Continues to prove people wrong

Morgan - 8 - MOTM - Warrior. A true blue, love him to bits. Captain.

Benny - 7 - Thought he was okay without venturing into great. Had better, had worse.

Fuchs - 7 - Marked down for the goal but an otherwise typical Fuchs display.

Albrighton - 6 - Little bit rabbit in headlights for me but he improved as the game went on - Marked down for the goal

Ndidi - 6- Didnt come off for him. Ball never sat up right for his chances and his passing was slightly wayward.

Drinkwater  - 6 - Patch him up and send him off for an all expense paid relaxation holiday at the poshest spa we can afford. He's knackered at the moment.

Mahrez - 8 - Poor first half but his mercurial best in the second.

Okazaki - 5 - Similar to Ndidi in that it wasn't his night.

Vardy - 8 - Wonder how the Spanish press have rated him after last night. Classic finish for the goal and he worked his nads off all game.

Leo - 7 - Ruffled a lot of feathers but Godin won pretty much every header that went near him.

Chilwell - 8 - Marauding best. Not a winger but not a fullback. If we sign someone like Trippier then a wingback formation could be superb for us.

Amartey - N/A - Came on when we were camped in Atleti's penalty area so didn't have much to do.

Shakey - 8 - Too naive in the first half but the second half had Simeone's arse going, no doubt.

Atleti - 8 - The most well drilled side in the world. Some of their players are undoubtedly world class.

Officials - 7 - They were actually quite decent. Shame they fell for Koke's trick of falling over whenever anyone got near him.

Just watched the game again and i was amazed at how well Morgan played. Didn't think it live, but he was definitely MOTM. Honourable mention goes to Simpson who was excellent also.

If you're going to mark Albrighton and Fuchs down for the goal then you need to do the same for Simpson and Mahrez who were just as if not more culpable for the goal for not closing down the crosser (Louis?).

I don't think Chilwells legs were long enough to trip the crosser from the bench....

Great team performance. They showed a lot heart and battled until the very end.

Schmeichel 6 - Could do nothing on their goal. Zieler would've saved it though.

Simpson 7 - Very solid defensive performance. Crossing ain't his thing though.

Morgan 7 - Hard game to come in in the 2nd HT after being injured. Up to the task.

Benny 7 - Good game. Calm on the ball. Really, reallly like him.

Fuchs 6.5 - Partly at fault on their goal.

Albrighton 6 - Hard worker as always and a couple of good crosses, but at fault on their goal.

Ndidi 6- Killed two pigeons in an attempt from ca. 25 Yards. Other than that quiet game.

Drinkwater 4 - Series of awful performances still ongoing and I don't think it's because of an injury. At this rate an upgrade next season is mandatory.

Mahrez 6 - Partly at fault for their goal. Poor first half. Much better behind the two strikers. Still disappointed in him though.

Okazaki 6 - Wasn't a game for him despite his willingness and hard work. Should not have started.

Vardy 7.5 - One of the best on the pitch. Brought hope back with his cool finish.

Leo - 7 Good display. Held the ball well, weighted on their defense and should have had a goal.

Chilwell 7.5 - Great performance from the kid. What an impact! Have to improve his crosses though.

Amartey - N/A

Slimani 9.5 MOTM

Shakey 6.5 - I still think that his approach in the first half was too respectful of the opponent and ultimately cost us the game. However, he made the right decisions (Leo, Chillwell + 3-4-1-2) for the second half. Gray and not Amartey though. (I think we lost Gray at Tuesday night)

All in all, it's the learning process and I'm convinced that not only he deserves the job but will be very good at it.

Atletico 8.5 - Fantastic team and fantastic coach. Masterclass defending and game control. Torn between seeing them or Juventus (Buffon) winning it.

Sorry meant Mahrez but the point still stands.

Nah, Mahrez should have closed down, but ultimately you're not allowed to have an opponent scoring this kind of header from the penalty point with such freedom. The guy didn't even have to jump.

Are people joking with their criticism of Drinkwater?

Do you understand how many times he tracked runs and won the ball back for us. He was good off the ball in both games and he won every 2nd ball on Tuesday night.

Again not sure if people realise but Drinks has won back possession in the middle third of the pitch more than any other champions league player this season. Previously he's just been our playmaker but now he has an all encompassing role and IMO he did a superb job with Ndidi against an Atletico team who effectively play with 4 central midfielders at times..

Are people joking with their high rating of Drinkwater?

Do you understand how many times he lost the ball and slowed the game? He was easily bypassed in the defensive (won every second ball, lol) and nowhere to be seen in the offensive phases where he 99% of the time passed backwards.

Again not sure if people realize but Drinks has been always getting away with murder and meaningless stats, picked from god knows who and without any context, won't make up for a consistently poor display since october. Previously he's just been our playmaker but now he refuse to assume this role and wanders like a ghost in the midfield. IMO he didn't do a great job with Ndidi having to against an Atletico team who effectively steamrolled the midfield in the first half.

How people are giving Okazaki 6/7 is beyond me, he was awful, and has been all season.

Offered no goal threat, couldn't retain the ball, Miss placed passes, and generally was shocking, really don't see what he offers us, and before people say he puts a shift in, I'm sorry running around, falling over doesn't justify a starting place, but hey ho that's my opinion, and looks like others see him differently.

Atletico are a WORLD CLASS team who play with a narrow 4 man midfield. They are all individually and collectively incredible on the ball.

Drinkwater & Ndidi were good against them. It was 2 v 4 most of the time and not sure if you noticed but we dominated possession in both halves and IMO won the midfield battle in both halves in the home leg. Drinks tracked every run and was on the ball more than any other player for us, had more shots than any other Leicester player and won the 2nd most tackles for us on the night.

How can he possibly be a ghost in midfield? Hahaha.. He's won more tackles than ANY other player in the middle third of the pitch in the Champions League!

If you can't appreciate how important to us he is then i don't know what you were watching. His role has changed from last year, you need to understand that.

Nah, I think you should just take off your rosa tinted glass :).

Drinkwater is a shadow of his former self and been consistently crap since his shocker against WBA back in october. Some say it's because he's carrying a knock, I don't buy it. Makes no sense to play an injured player. He's, with Mahrez, the only player who didn't turn up since Ranieri's sacking. He's only playing because of a lack of alternative in the midfield. Under normal circumstances he'd be on the bench. Period.

You've not even addressed my points made?

You were the one claiming stats need context so please try and elaborate further.

I can only assume you don't ever see us live and see how many runs he tracks off the ball

Schmeichel 7

Simpson 8 - he's a limited player but his reading of the game and intelligence is outstanding.

Morgan 7

Benny 7

Fuchs 7 - gave Saul the freedom of the city for their goal but other than he was decent.

Albrighton 6

Ndidi 6

Drinkwater 5

Mahrez 7

Okazaki 5

Vardy 8

Ulloa 7 - tried hard but ultimately Godin handled him well.

Chilwell 7 - some poor crossings but if he works on that he can become a great outlet for us

Amartey - N/A

Shakespeare 8 - tactically astute but Atleti have superior players to us so it was an uphill task.

Atleti 8.5 - The most well drilled and organised and tactically intelligent team we have played in years. They would walk this league. Brilliant team wirh a brilliant coach.

For me, the reason drinky made my blood boil is those moments of touching the ball for the sake of touching the ball, he did nothing with it, he just gets the ball and  pass it back to Kasper or Benny/wes or returning it to you in a tighter space.

Sorry, but we need a quality box to box if he keeps on being passive like that.

Posted

1. He has the most shots yet couldn't get one on target. Let alone score. Unless you consider killed pigeons or spectators as a valid stat.

2. We had more possession because Atletico are, like us, not a possession based team and leading the tie. They sat deep let us the ball and killed us on a counter.

3. "Bunch of meaningless stats" bit

Kinda dislike stats cited with no context. Gives me the feeling I'm actually having a youtube conversation with Ronaldo (the fake one) and Messi fanboys who only swear by numbers. Football is a bit more than that. And of course, the one who brings those stats on the table, is also supposed to give them a context.

DD's role in a 4-4-2 didn't change. Ndidi took Kanté's job. The main attack disruptor in the middle, is Ndidi. No matter how much tackles DD wins, he's often dispossessed. He's responsible, beside giving a hand in the defense, to coordinate the transition between defense and attack and give the game a direction. Which he doesn't do.

All I saw is a guy in the offensive phase carefully caring to stay at least 3-4 meters away from the guy with the ball and if that guy gives him the ball anyway, you can be sure that the ball will be safely handed to our defense or to the next guy right away. Which for a team relying on speedy attacks is kinda annoying. Or try a long hoof forward that either ends by the opposition or in the hands of some spectator.

Interesting would be his forward passes completion.

4. "I can only assume you don't ever see us live and see how many runs he tracks off the ball"

lol.

Kasper 7 not a lot to do

Simpson 7 played well again

Fuchs 7 would have been 8 apart from the goal

Wes 8 feared for him but great until injured

Benaluane 7 composed and good distribution really like him

Mahrez 7 much better second half against class defence

Ndidi 7 good but distribution erratic at times

Drinkwater 6 worked hard but yet again final touch missing

Albrighton 7 crossing not as good as recently but what a shift

Okazaki 5 pretty useless didn't link up didn't disrupt seems well off in form

Vardy 8 hard work goal plus really unsettled their defence second half

Subs Chillwell 8 one of his best

Leonardo 8 so much more effective that Slimani was in Madrid

Amarty n/a

Shakespeare 9 actually made emphatic tactical changes against a great side and manager

Athletico 8 great proffered outfit hope they go on to win

Ref 8 much much better than previous one

A few people marking Ulloa lower than he deserves, I reckon. He deserved an 8.

I was watching from the Kop and thought he had a great half - a real handful for them, winning lots of flick-ons and holding centre-halves at bay physically to gain possession for team-mates on the edge of the area etc.

If he's still capable of performances like that, we should be looking to keep him - and playing him a bit more often next season.

Mahrez takes 100% of the blame for the goal, for me. We know how Simpson defends- stands off so he doesn't get skinned. Mahrez just casually walked over and watched the bloke look up and stick it right on Saul's bonce.
