The thing that jumps out however is it’s a recurring injury.

And ankles are a pretty essential area for a professional footballer - and having read the description on this injury, I would say it is very serious;

The lateral malleolus fracture is a 'Weber C' injury - above the ankle joint. There is a transverse medial malleolus fracture. The distal tibiofibular joint is also widened. The ankle is completely unstable; the structures beyond the dotted line are detached from the tibia or fibula proximally.

Did you just Google malleolar injury? And it's a big assumption to make that all 3 episodes of injury were on the same leg.

From the little we've been told about his injury, it sounds like a stress fracture, which is most likely on the medial malleolus. Very very different from the description of the traumatic bimalleolar fracture you've copypasted there.

Plus we now (or will) have good options in midfield

Certainly we have better depth there than at CB yeah, that too.

I can see where this comes from, I think he's won the ball in the defensive third more than any other player in the league (That was at least true at some point) so you'd think he could be half decent in midfield, as well as his obvious ball carrying skills and half decent passing ability. However unless he's up against fellaini I don't see much point of him competing for the ball against someone small and technical in midfield as hes not gonna get close to them with his speed. Definitely thinks hes best at centreback, bringing the ball forward while either a midfielder drops in to fill in his centreback position or the likes of simpson fuchs and morgan position themselves to make a temporarily back three.

However saying that I wouldn't be against a back five of Amartey Huth Maguire Morgan Chilwell  or something similar, with Maguire stepping into Midfield when needed against the Big teams where possession will be minimal. a midfield in front of them being potentially mahrez ndidi iborra gray with vardy upfront or some variant could do well away from home.

The guy is clearly a talented footballer, but I'm not yet convinced by him defensively. Can plant his feet at times and gets caught out of position.

Think he'd be better in a three, but is a good age and still has bags of potential to improve further.

That’s where he’s been playing for England. I’m sure Southgate would love to see us play a back 3 so Maguire gets even more familiar with it.

Not sure playing 3 at the back accommodates our best attacking players though (Riyad, Gray, Vardy). I think 433 will be best with RVG up top, Iborra, Silva and Ndidi in the middle, ahead of the usuaL back 5 (Chilly v Fuchs is a toss up for me)

Southgate would absolutely love us playing a back 3 you're right. Mahrez unfortunately may leave in Jan though in which case our system will probably have to change. He's got to be one of the best players in the world not cup tied for Europe which makes me think someone might well offer us 50m for him. If that happens keeping him would be difficult...
