Point would be nice. Or the Aussies not beating Peru by too many if we can't get anything out the French.

I had no idea you were Danish.

Think France Denmark might be a draw, suits both teams.

I'm not sure that the Aussies will even beat Peru - could go either way, or a draw quite likely.

Peru have looked quite organised and very good in possession, just poor in the penalty box, which has cost them.

With their big following out there, I can't imagine them slackening off in their last match, even though they've been eliminated.

I was aware of your Irish connection, but unaware that you were the secret grandson of Hitler and Eva Braun.....that explains a lot.

In the interests of self-disclosure, I should reveal that I had one of those Ancestry DNA tests recently.

Apparently, genetically I'm 89% Irish/Scottish/Welsh, 5% W. Europe, 3% GB, 1% Iberian peninsula..... & 2% Finland/NW Russia ()

So, maybe that explains my tendencies to Europhilia  and drunkenness, and maybe Lenin sowed a few wild oats before he returned to Russia for the Revolution?

I always been intending to do one of those eventually. Just to find out how "Greek" I am as my friends often claim.

South Park did a great little satirical piece on it lol

Lost that France game 2-1 in 1998, which might not be enough.

At least 75% of those have no chance of winning it this year.

I mean, Brazil in the round of 16 for Germany, they'll be right up for it after getting humiliated at home last time round.

Interesting stat:

Denmark and France have faced off in the groups of major tournaments (EC and WC) five times previously.

Four out of five times, the winner of the game went on to win the whole tournament:

Euro 1984, France beat Denmark 1-0 in the opening game and end up champions

Euro 1992, Denmark beat France 2-1 in the final group game and end up champions

WC 1998, France beat Denmark 2-1 in the final group game and end up champions

Euro 2000, France beat Denmark 3-0 in the first group game and end up champions

WC 2002, Denmark beat France 2-0 but get knocked out 3-0 by England in the last 16.

Is GB not Irish/Scottish/Welsh? How are GB genetically different from that group and W. Europe anyway?

In geopolitical terms, Scotland and Wales are GB, and N. Ireland in UK, but they're analysing the source of genes.

I suppose more than 150 years ago, gene pools would have been pretty stable for several centuries as people tended to stay in their local areas/countries.

I don't have the expertise to answer that second question, but think they just correlate combinations of genes to particular areas. There's some overlap between different groups on the map, too.

Although you sometimes can't tell people of English, Scottish, Welsh or Irish origin apart, sometimes it's quite obvious: e.g. not many tall blond people in Ireland/Wales, more redheads in Scotland/Ireland, more stocky, dark people in Ireland/Wales.

They're mainly looking at gene combinations established a few hundred years back, I think. Obviously, since then people have moved around more and there's been more inter-breeding.

But if you went back 1000-2000 years, many of the Scots, Irish & Welsh would have been in England, while the English (Normans, Saxons etc.) would have been in W. Europe.....and everyone would have been over North India way before that (some of the Irish via Iberia)!

Would France prefer to be in the bottom half? I know it's still conjecture but the route to the trophy might be a little easier that way.

I'll be interested to see if they look like they're really up for this.

Maybe fans and players of the more recently successful nations, Germany, Brazil, Spain, France etc don't think that way. Maybe the England team doesn't either but I certainly do.

Meanwhile, France midfielder Corentin Tolisso is already looking ahead to the knockouts.

"Croatia will come out of Group D, so above all we have to avoid finishing second to avoid meeting them," he said.

"Between Nigeria, Iceland and Argentina, they are all good teams. We know the Argentines have very strong individuals, notably Lionel Messi.

"You never know what's going to happen in a match. But we know the last 16 will be difficult, regardless of the opponent."

Possibly answers my question, we'll see soon I suppose.
