Good managers can make their team perform better than the sum of all its parts.

I think he has done, they have a championship level squad and while that continues every year they survive is an achievement. We are not seriously saying that Rafa is not a good manager now, are we?

Nope, just saying he's no genius and not head and shoulders above Puel.
They're both good managers, the initial post was to make fun of people wishing we fire Puel to hire him as it would make a huge difference.

Yes of course

If it came across sarcastic it certainly wasn’t my intention. Genuinely curious. But you are right. He seems very very settled now. Just wish he wasn’t injured as long.

What’s this utter none sense about Benítez being a mediocre manager?  Ancelotti once remarked that during the final of champions league in 2005 in Istanbul, Rafa’s team, Liverpool, was losing 3-0 against Ancelotti’s team Milan.  Rafa made some changes (strengthening the midfield).  For Ancelotti it was madness, but as he says “they won in the end”.  If Ancelotti thinks Rafa is a great manager, you bet his opinion probably has greater value than ours

13 years ago that - his performance is getting an easy ride at Newcastle. They’ve failed to score this season against Cardiff, Palace and us. They’ve been knocked out of a Cup by lower league opposition. He’s flogged Mitrovic and Gayle to have a strikeforce of Rondon and Joselu.

If Benitez had ambition, he’d have quit Newcastle in the summer.

I think nobody said he was mediocre but I learned that losing 3-0 at half-time is shit, no matter the circumstances and no matter what happens next.
Seriously, I don't think Ancelotti meant he was a great manager, he just meant "he did something stupid but it worked somehow at the end so what can I say ?"
It's like when someone call 80% of the pot at turn for a gutshot draw and get his out river, it can win but still is a terribly stupid decision.

While I don't agree that benitez is mediocre, rating manager just by hearsay is not reliable.

Mourinho once said benitez turn the european best club onto trash (inter milan). Nobody said same about puel. Should we say puel is better just because this? Obviously not lol

Think Benitez is a decent cup manager when his team is good enough. He plays very conservative, but very effective defensive football. The reason he never wins league competitions is he can never get his teams to break down opponents. At Liverpool, he drew far too many games he should have won, and his sides ever since have lacked penetration. It actually suits Newcastle in the PL because he’ll nick the odd win and get points, and Cardiff and Huddersfield are going down already, but they hardly dominated the Championship when they came up...
