MC Prussian Posted 1 February 2019 Posted 1 February 2019 Exciting news coming from my adopted home country: The Canadian Premier League is about to kick off this year, with initially seven teams in the mix. The emphasis is on developing local/regional talent first and foremost, trying to help boost the national side, ready for the 2026 World Cup. Pacific FC (Langford, Vancouver Island, BC - Westhills Stadium) Cavalry FC (Calgary, AB - Spruce Meadows (an equestrian site)) Edmonton FC (Alberta; re-founded - Clarke Stadium) Valour FC (Winnipeg, Manitoba - Investors Group Field) Forge FC (Hamilton, Ontario - Tim Hortons Field) York 9 (Ontario - Alumni Field) HFX Wanderers FC (Halifax, Nova Scotia - Wanderers Ground) https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/46988859 @Jattdogg @spacemunky Going to any 905 derbies this season? Great to hear there's a bit of a grassroots touch to it all. Hope the league takes off like a rocket and that more teams are to follow soon, in particular from Québec, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick and Northern/Western Ontario (The Soo, Sudbury, Thunder Bay).

Jattdogg Posted 1 February 2019 Posted 1 February 2019 It will be good to have a canadian prem league im just concerned about how it will manage to survive with teams spread across canada. I mean a flight from Toronto to BC is about 4 hours. Heck bc to halifax is probably 6 to 7 hours. I can fly to london in about 6 hours from toronto lol. The clubs wont make the kind of money needed to fly across the country and be profitable whilst paying a decent wage to players. I hope im proven wrong. With having TFC , Vancouver whitecaps and Montreal all in the MLS (biggest market areas) it kind if takes the shine off the CPL. I have to wait and see how the season shapes out schedule wise but i would be supporting the hamilton club Forge FC. When we came to canada i spent pretty much most of my life in Hamilton going to junior, secondary and university in the city. I support the hamilton tigercats of the CFL, played footy in their stadium back in the 90s several times so it has to be. My youngest brother still lives there as do my inlaws so im always there. Hamilton has a massive immigrant population from italy, Portugal, serbia, croatia and more recently middle eastern countries so support should be there. I suspect @spacemunky will support hamilton seeing as he lives next door to hamilton. York would be much further away. Maybe we will catch a game!

Nalis Posted 1 February 2019 Posted 1 February 2019 Quite like the team names, good to see a team with propa old fashioned name like Wanderers. Also, I would like the idea of opposition teams playing this when Cavalry come to town:
TiffToff88 Posted 1 February 2019 Posted 1 February 2019 It's good to see that it's going to be a league based system with potential expansion leading to a promotion/relegation system, rather than the nonsensical North American sporting tradition of Franchised teams with draft pick systems. I've never liked that.
spacemunky Posted 1 February 2019 Posted 1 February 2019 Hamilton for me yep! Haven't even been to the "new" Tim Hortons Stadium yet, so it'll be cool to see it.
MPH Posted 1 February 2019 Posted 1 February 2019 Good luck and hope it grows. Anything that will help football gain more popularity throughout the world is a yes from me.

Hamilton is known as steel town, steel city due to the manufacturing of steel that happens there as well as lots of trades jobs like tool and die makers etc. This is exactly how we came to hamilton cuz me dad was a machinst/tool and die maker back in Leicester and was recruited to Canada. As for Tim Hortons field it holds around 24k (cna be expanded to 40k) fans and really is built more for "Canadian football" . They have that artificial grass pitch but thats how things are over here with the weather extremes its hard to maintain a real grass pitch. I played on the pitch back when it was called Ivor Wynne and it was shitty astro turf so not fun for the footy. Maybe one day we will be able to afford a 45 year old wayne rooney.

Excellent, a working class town is the team for me Imagine the glory days when Hamilton manage to sign Danny Drinkwater in 2030 What does the strip look like.. is it released yet?

It hasnt been released yet but according to wikipedia these will be he colours The official club colours are spark orange, platinum steel and waterfall white. They are used to signify the sparks that come from the strike of a hammer, the local manufacturing industry and the many waterfalls across the escarpment.

Would those sparks be cum shots?
spacemunky Posted 3 February 2019 Posted 3 February 2019 Not sure I'm thrilled with orange as the main colour. Could be worse I guess, could've been red.
spacemunky Posted 10 February 2019 Posted 10 February 2019 Bit worried now that I see our rival(York) have signed Emilio Estevez. Although last i saw of him he was coaching kids hockey.
TiffToff88 Posted 11 February 2019 Posted 11 February 2019 i've been trying to figure out who i should support based on links to Leicester City, so i thought about Iain Hume, decided to see where in Canada he's from only to discover that he was born in Scotland Therefore, I've based my entire future of what will no doubt be as an avid fan of Canadian Soccer on the fact that Lars Hirschfeld, 1 Appearance for Leicester City back in 2005, Was born in Edmonton, Alberta. GO FC EDMONTON!
spacemunky Posted 27 April 2019 Posted 27 April 2019 Kicks off in 10 minutes on a lovely cold and windy day in the steel city(aka Hamilton).

spacemunky Posted 27 April 2019 Posted 27 April 2019 The pitch looked bloody awful. The football was as expected.

Is what it is, grass doesnt work in april in canada. Going to have to make it to a game surprised there was 17k fans wow. Im sure that wont last but probably a cheap game to get to. My youngest brother lives about 2.5km from the grounds. Decent 30 minute walk or 5 min bus ride.

When I was a kid going to TiCats games my dad would park at Centre Mall so we could avoid all the hustle and bustle. Then we would leave the game early, regardless of the score My dad was from Nottingham, so that should be all ya need to know

Yes the pitch isnt the greatest looking. I played on it back in highschool when it was the old school astroturf which was literally like green coloured cloth on cement. Wasnt fun for footy.
