Watch Mechanism

Hi Guys,

I have a simple question that I have been trying to find out an answer for online and can’t seem to find anything. Thought someone on here may know before I join a watch forum.

Anyway, inside a watch, on the outside of the balance wheel, there is usually a part that moves and it can point to an ‘F’ or ‘S’ and a ‘A’ or ‘R’.

What do these letters represent and what is this switch for?

Any info is gratefully received.

Thanks

Its the simple language of the Watch maker...Fast & Slow....Avance & Retard. For Swiss and German, also have N & V....

Basic regulators to make the Watch go slightly Faster or slower.

For Timing Balance various Watchmakers use sometimes different name regulators....
