Wymsey Posted 22 December 2019 Posted 22 December 2019 Just came across this video via the BBC Leicester page: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/football/50868507 The club have created a 'social cafe', in partnership with the Premier League, to allow local youngsters to create a bond with elderly people in the community at The King Power Stadium. Another reason why this club is considered as a 'caring' organisation towards the local community.
HybridFox Posted 22 December 2019 Posted 22 December 2019 The club does a lot of positive community work and I'm happy this is being recognised in mainstream media. We are a family
DerbyshireFox Posted 22 December 2019 Posted 22 December 2019 Thought this was going to be another thread about our away ends Seriously though, well done to the club. Top work as ever 👍
Bayfox Posted 22 December 2019 Posted 22 December 2019 Was featured on this morning's MOTD repeat as well.
TheLittleBigMan Posted 22 December 2019 Posted 22 December 2019 Bloody awesome idea. Seems to me the elderly are gone and forgotten once they stop paying taxes. They used to be respected members of society that people had time for. Not a good world to grow old in.
Wolfox Posted 23 December 2019 Posted 23 December 2019 Great initiative…. A lot focused around the elderly, however, loneliness is not the domain of them alone… My brother in laws husband has just set up a charity to support younger people with loneliness…. Social isolation is awful and amplified at this time of the year…

TheLittleBigMan Posted 23 December 2019 Posted 23 December 2019 8 minutes ago, Toddybad said: No idea how you'd conclude this. In the 1950s there was only one pensioner for every seven adults of working age. The ratio has gone from 7:1 then to being likely to be 2:1 by 2050. (Incidentally this is the reason no government will honestly limit immigration - we're desperate for workers because we can't cover the cost and scope of health and other services used by the elderly.) There are all sorts of initiatives directed towards the old, including government policy being to protect them at the expense of everybody else over the last few years (and I'm not arguing whether that was right or wrong, just pointing out it happened). The old have gotten their way at each of the last four elections and during the recent brexit referendum. They are literally dominating the direction of the country. It's brilliant that our club are doing this and I wholeheartedly support it but being lonely is not just the preserve of the old. Wow. The cold view of politics is always a great way to measure peoples loneliness. Clearly you don't wholeheartedly support what the club are doing otherwise you wouldn't have jumped on it with a volley of "government policy being to protect them and the expense of everybody else" type sweeping statements. You have a personal beef with this. Good for you. No loneliness isn't just for the elderly, but there is without doubt a level of suffering happening, as i'm sure you know well enough, and regardless of your political views, something needs to be done to prevent it. If not, why should anyone give a sh*t about loneliness full stop.

The rest was just because my eyebrows were raised regarding the idea pensioners are somehow a forgotten breed. They're growing in number and ever more powerful in reality. But that is a separate thing. In terms of the issue of loneliness we'd both agree City are doing a good thing.

I'm sure there is many others too, like having to choose between food and heating. My own elderly mother can't afford to have hers on a lot as it cost too much on her pension. Things like this I can't see getting better but more thank likely worse. I suppose my view point is more based around the fact that I see a lot of suffering going on in the world I live in and most of it happens through politics and economy. I just feel it's important we all remember to be better people, more caring and compassionate regardless of our view points on how the country should be run, and initiatives like this one are a great place to start Up the foxes.

My pension is taxed, and when I kick the bucket there's always inheritance tax. I agree with your sentiment, the elderly seem much more marginalised now then they were half a century ago. Good move by City.
