Didn't Tigers' Martin Johnson also play for the Panthers  on the astro in the middle?

Yeah that rings a bell.

From google

Yes, Martin Johnson played for the Leicester Panthers in American football, but this was in the early stages of his career, before he became a rugby star. He played for the Panthers as a tight end or defensive end. Later, he went on to become a legendary rugby player for England and Leicester Tigers.

The Rise and Fall of Leicester's Roman Forum

Leicester's very own Roman Forum  Built in less than 24 hours by renowned French artist Olivier Grossetête (and a team of volunteers) using cardboard and tape.  Then, one day later, see it brought crashing down by another group of over-enthusiastic volunteers! All part of Leicester's excellent Old Town Festival (Roman Edition)

Is that Bighead in French?

Victory Day Parade, Charles Street, 1945.
Shortly after Victory Day, in May 1945, there was a parade organised in Leicester.
The parade involved the many civilian and military workers who supported the war effort. They paraded on foot, on floats and with vehicles in front of the Lord Mayor outside City Hall. Huge crowds of locals came to support and celebrate what was an incredibly important day.
This photo shows an armoured vehicle parading past the saluting Lord Mayor, in front of City Hall on Charles Street.

Not sure if already mentioned. I believe the Lord Mayor was Charles Edward Worthington. He was an ace pilot in ww1

A mosque approved for the Monsell. Goodness gracious.

The City has gone. It's lost. Much in the way 'Londoners' don't exist anymore or those croft people in them jock islands.  Change is inevitable but the pace of change has been lightning. Even the suburbs are essentially starting to struggle to retain any original Leicester identity.

You've got to to further out now to the county - Coalville, Hinckley etc - to find any traditional Leicester culture.

The same community who will be using the new mosque were already using the community centre on the Monsell.

The pub has been empty for ages but has now been given a new lease of life by people who will actually use the building, I'm not sure what the problem is with it.

Not sure exactly what you mean by 'the city is lost'  either, last time I checked it was definitely still there

Both absolute ****ing shitholes so if that's what we are supposed to be missing, then I guess I'm not missing much.

Yeah well, it's all well and good reviving am old building, just as I'm sure you'd be delighted in an andulucian village to see some derelict stone house converted and 'brought to life' into a Greggs. It's new life, yeah, but really?...

Seriously, if someone wanted to renovate it as a boozer, they would have done it. If a community group wanted to turn it into a youth centre they would have...they didn't.

You're being a buffoon pal. The post was lamenting the death of old Leicester. Idgaf what you think, but mosques on the white working class monsell is indicative that the Leicester of old is all but gone..

You can celebrate it. Enjoy your 5am calls to prayer on a tannoy. Fair enough. It's just odd. Doesn't mean I'm

right or wrong or whether you are right or wrong. It's just a bit odd, as I said above like Greggs in Venice or an Irish bar serving Shepherd's Pie in the Maldives. Weird.

😂

Me the buffoon? Get with the times pal, it's not 1951 anymore.

Nothing odd about a mosque in one of the most multicultural countries on Earth in one of the most multicultural cities on Earth.

if Hinckley and Coalville are indicative of Old Leicester then like I say, what loss is there to lament?

Brings me to a point in an argument on here the other day - people spend half their time moaning that 'they' don't integrate and the other half of their time moaning that they want everything to remain white so-called 'working class'. Can't really have both.

Not sure how much travelling you've done, but there's Irish bars serving absolute shit in most of the countries I've been to, not to mention that there's Irish bars in every City in England, surely we should only have English bars in Engurland under that logic? Oh, hang on, didnt we get Irish bars here because of Irish immigration? Ironic isnt it.

We're desperate for housing.

I've suggested before that all these brown field sites and unused buildings should be utilised for homes, not places of worship no matter what your belief, denomination ect

Absolutely ludicrous that precious space and such opportunities are used in this way.

Agree to an extent but if developers aren't interested and don't think they can turn a profit what can you do? We are at the mercy of Developers who are only interested in building 3/4 bed detached houses made of paper and flogging them for £350k a pop.

He's travelled loads - that's why he is able to stereotype characters from every other nation so 'accurately'.

You don't think we have places like that here? We literally have an English place called The Pie Shop where I live, and Iceland in the next town sell Greggs from the freezer.

There aren't going to be any tannoys at the mosque either from what I understand so there won't be a 5am call to prayer.

Posted

The issue with it being a mosque is that it's not really there for the whole community and that you wouldn't want to live near one because the traffic and inconsiderate parking can be insane and the call to prayer might not be your cup of tea either.

Unless you're Muslim and go to that mosque there's no benefits only negatives.

Wow. £1.25 to see The Drifters.

I wonder what their fee was.

The Bali Hai discotheque as seen in the poster, was a separate area upstairs where you'd take a girl you'd just met for a bit of "me time", hoping to cop a feel.
