After years of working loooong days (7am-midnight, 7 days a week) when I was working at sea

???

TIL the Roman Empire typically avoided using slave rowers, instead preferring freemen, because they were more motivated. : r/todayilearned

Wait... 17hrs every day? 24 minus 17 = 7 hrs rest time.

119 hrs per week. How the hell did you function?

Edit. Just seen @Line-X response. That explains it.

An hour after i take a zoppie tablet.

I asked GP some years ago for Zopiclone as I really struggled to sleep after a night shift. They refused on the grounds of possible addiction and gave me useless alternatives like meditation.

Im on the strong 7.5mg ones and have been for over 2 years as i was going days with little to no sleep. I was warned about possible addiction but my GP still gave them to me and it helps. Not tried a night without one so dont really know if i need them still to get sleep. Just an easy option to take one then an hour later guarenteed sleep.

Up at 7.00 to be in my office by 7.30/7.45. Then work til about 2.00pm and then had the option of either having a couple hours kip or heading out for a spot of lunch if we were in port.
then back in the office for 4.00pm until about 8.00pm then I used to host a dinner table until about 10.00pm. Back to the office for an hour or so and then quick rounds and a beer or two and off to bed by about midnight.

And repeat.

6 months on and 6 weeks off.

Really not as bad as it sounds!!

So your GP thinks the potential for your addiction is more dangerous than you being like a zombie at work.  I've had sleep problems previously and always keep a packet of Zopiclones just in case.  I only occasionally use one but its a comfort to know they're available if I need them - plus I've never got close to being addicted to them.  There's always that potential but the benefits can outweigh the risks.  I've found Melatonin is a good one to take to reset the body clock, tipped off by a pilot!  I used to fly internationally in my work and found I could use them to good effect - my rule of thumb was to only take one on the first night in a new time zone, then I was sorted.
