The Running Thread (formerly How fast can you run a 5k?)

So after a stressful day yesterday, I realised there was no way I was doing the planned 7 miles (as part of my half marathon training), so decided to do a 5k route I used but see how fast I could do it.

My previous PB for any 5k (and particularly this route) was about 30.15. Managed it in 27.12, which included fannying about at traffic lights.

Legs hurt but really pleased with it. Never thought I'd smash even 29 minutes, but to see I can do that is a massive achievement for me.

Some improvement that 👏

My wife did the C25k with Desford striders who were brilliant as she had never run before, their support and encouragement got her through it and they graduated with the Braunstone park Run.

They are now running a 5-10k group which I have joined her in and most of the C25k have stepped up to do.

Not ran for a few years now but did  5k yesterday in 31.40 and I have set myself a 3 week target to get below 30

Going to dust of the trainers again this weekend, I've had a bit of an on-off time this year with one thing and another.

I recognise I'm in a bit of a slump at the minute and been makinig excuses not to run.

I've gone in to the ballot for the London Marathon next year but not holding out much hope, so looking at Brighton also.

A bit of warm weather training for me in Majorca. A nice bit of beachfront to run up and down, and everyone's got the same idea - runners galore.

Going to go again tomorrow in an effort to cancel out the all inclusive San Miguel (it won't)

Don’t know if anyone is charting Josh Patterson’s effort for Samaritans. He’s running a marathon in every UK city consecutively - 76. He’s reached 63 now which is just past the world record.

He’s made £120k plus so far.

He clearly looks like he’s lost a couple of stone and it’s taken six hours a marathon but utterly incredible effort

Abbey park has a park run now. Might do it this Saturday coming. Haven’t done one before

Park Run is great, and really is for all abilities. Haven't done one for a while as I've got a good routine now that gets me out at other times but when you're struggling for motivation (which I have at many points in the past) it's good to have something that's regular and makes you leave the house to be somewhere at a certain time.

Abbey Park is nice and flat too, should be a fast one

Managed sub 25 last night at 5k.

Training alongside weights is really coming together. I’m not shifting weight but there is now a notable difference in the physique of my legs

Hope it pays off in three weeks time. Last long run before Derby half tomorrow and times aren’t as good as other training cycles but just a bit more philosophical this time.

Doing weights/leg exercises makes a world of difference I found when I was running hard. Have a look at no weight HIIT sessions on YouTube as well if you want a variation.

I've been doing a lot of squats, walking lunges (with and without added weight) for the last couple of months. Usually just once a week for a few sets but my god it makes a difference. I'm doing over 100kg on the leg press for 8-12 rep sets with little issue.

Did the Manchester half today. My first half marathon and it's sodding 20C heat with no shade, at 10am.

2:17 was my time and given the temperature, I will absolutely take. Plenty of people having to walk, a few passed out and/ or threw up.

This heat is a killer at the moment. I’ve done a decent 10 miles this morning but the biggest battle is keeping heart rate and body heat down

I’m pondering wether to get a hydration vest for my training block as the mileage increases but I’m not sure if the pack will actually make me hotter.

Fair play - the heat is a zapper. Incredible effort for anyone racing in that today.

Good set of intervals yesterday - getting piny runners lower half arms.

Just looked at the long distance forecast for Derby - 17 degrees by 10am and 19 degrees by 11am. When your finishing time is schedule for 11.20am, you might as well bake me.

I have some energy gels in a running pouch, but worry about the practicalities of carrying bottles. Because it’s set out 10k running then -10 k walking etc , I’m hoping to pop into corner shops on the route during walking.

Are they the SIS ones? I use those and I really like them, but I only use the standard energy ones. I've just looked and they do a version that's got electrolytes in as well as the carbs, so I'd have thought they're worth a look if you've not got any already.

Is this an organised event or just you being brilliant on your own? Surely if the former there will be some sort of water stations along the way?

I'm going on about electrolytes because I got really dehydrated years ago after running on a REALLY hot day, and that was an exciting new way of feeling unwell that I wouldn't wish to repeat.  Drinking loads of fluid didn't make it better, and it was only when I happened to eat some salty food that I stopped feeling really rough, and yes it was crisps
