Meanwhile, we’re flogging our gas into the EU cos they have stage facilities whereas we don’t!!! What smart Alec decided to get rid of all the gasometers, as well as coal fired power stations and the coal industry? We were supposed to be self sufficient in the 70’s! Some Fvckin idiots have run this country

Possibly the kind of smart Alec who doesn't like the idea of massive amounts of sulphur dioxide pollution causing lung issues across vast swathes of the population and carbon emissions as a whole causing disruption on a vast scale in the near future.

Hopefully someone thinking of the long game rather than just the here and now, anyway.

If they had been really thinking of the long game, they would have put the new power sources in place before they got rid of the polluting old ones.

I lived through the seventies.  I know about stockpiling candles, and have plenty in stock.  (They look nice in winter even when they aren't needed.)

Absolutely.

It was in all likelihood a move made for far more base purposes than the one I describe, but it did have - and has - to be done.

Well, maybe that smart alec should have brought into effect some kind of replacement before they decided to get rid of it all cos now we're gonna freeze to death as well as suffering with lung issues and the world falling apart due to carbon emmisions.

You're not wrong there.

Lack of foresight all round.

If three hours without heating in your home is a lethal inconvenience, then what would happen if you attended a football match?  ;)

Nothing, but i'm not on about short term problems, i'm talking about smart alecs that decided to get rid of producing and storing our own energy before replacing it with something else, or possibly continued to work with our resources but develop ways of preventing carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere which is not an impossible task.

Carbon capture on the scale required would be an impossibility without a massive leap in technology, sadly.

It's easier, cheaper and better to switch sources, as costly as that's going to be in the short term.

Maybe so, but 100 years ago no-one would have ever thought that humans could make it rain.

True, and I'm normally the first to say tech development can come very quickly when the need arises.

I think in this case though the easier and cheaper path is to switch, unless someone has some very, very good advances in capturing emissions that they're going to put out there very soon in a widespread fashion. Time is of the essence and all the time the cost of turning this around gets higher.

The Rough Gas storage field (off Hull) was decommissioned in 2017.  They are trying to bring it back online.  At its peak it held about 9 days worth of gas.  It allowed us to buy cheap summer gas and burn it in the winter, when it is expensive.

The dash for gas started in the 80's under Mrs T.  To get away from coal and the miners.  They had a strike about that...

While I'm here

https://www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/  is fascinating for those with their own anorak and bobble hat.

Domestic gas wont be switched off/reduce pressure due to the faff of trying to switch it back on.  If you think about it, every appliance would need to be switched off, otherwise houses start to go bang within a few minutes of the gas coming back on!

Electricity is much easier to cut off and restore.  Supermarkets/hospitals/telecoms and other essentials are generator backed with 5 days fuel.

3 hour outages are about the maximum they can safely do before food in freezers starts to thaw.

The only real need for power cuts is if gas is shut off from russia AND the weather is especially cold across europe AND there is no wind.
