That reminds me of going to the Hoover Dam when they were building the bridge there. How they do it at that height?

Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel
photo of Hampton Roads Virginia Bridge-Tunnel For Engineering information visit
Now that is some cool engineering a bridge that becomes a tunnel. The Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel is a 4.6 miles (7.4 km) crossing for Interstate 664 in Hampton Roads, Virginia, USA. It is a four-lane bridge-tunnel composed of bridges, trestles, man-made islands, and tunnels under a portion of the Hampton Roads harbor where the James, Nansemond, and Elizabeth Rivers come together in the southeastern portion of Virginia.

This is San Francisco's Golden Gate bridge. In 1987 an estimated 800,000 people flocked to the the Golden Gate Bridge for its 50th anniversary. The weight of the large crowd caused the bridge to sag 7 feet, flattening its usual convex shape. Engineer Daniel E. Mohn reaffirmed the bridge was not overstressed as a result of Bridgewalk ‘87.

A bit nuts, that.

In 1905, 115 years ago, British Engineers constructed the Victoria Falls Bridge linking Zambia and Zimbabwe. This was part of Cecil John Rhodes mega project of connecting Africa from Cape Town to Cairo via rail.
Note, however, that the bridge was built/prefabricated in England and then shipped to Mozambique and transported to its current location from the Port of Beira by rail for assembly.
The assembly took only 14 months and it fit according to specifications.
Note, that this was 115 years ago, before computers were invented. The British Engineers had earlier come to assess the Victoria Falls gorge, take measurements and designed the bridge based on the geology of the gorge, then went to England to build the bridge!
To this day, the bridge is fully operational carrying both trucks and cargo trains - 115 years later.

🚂 The Goat Canyon Trestle, located in San Diego, California, is the longest wooden railroad bridge in the world. Built from redwood beams, this impressive bridge spans 185 meters and reaches a height of almost 57 meters. It is part of the stretch known as the Carrizo Gorge, a section of the railway route that received the nickname "the impossible railway" in 1919 due to the extreme technical and logistical difficulties involved in its construction. This emblematic bridge is a testimony to the engineering of the early 20th century that remains an architectural marvel today.

The Bamboo Bridge in Cambodia is an incredible example of traditional engineering and community resilience. Here are some interesting points about the bridge:
- Made entirely of bamboo, with no metal or concrete support
- Designed to support the weight of cars and hundreds of people
- Spanning the Mekong River, connecting Skuon to the rest of the country
- Dismantled and rebuilt annually to withstand floodwaters
- Demonstrates resourcefulness and ingenuity of local people
- A vital transportation link for the community, used daily by many
This bridge is a remarkable example of how traditional knowledge and skills can be used to create sustainable and functional infrastructure.
