People have a pop at the likes of Drinkwater, Tielemans and Mahrez so why is Maddison so quick to be defended? It all seems pretty light hearted anyway

There’s literally a poster calling him “a total bellend” based on an extremely innocuous and  inoffensive social media comment about a leisure activity in terms of game of football. It’s clearly not “pretty light hearted”. “Unbelievably warped out of all sense of perspective” is a much better description. Some people need to get a life.

Those players did down tools tbf, Madders at least cared even till the end tbf even though he knew he’d walked into a top club after.

You are right, of course.

But life isn't fair.  And sport is life.

Some good players are remembered for great things eg:
 - Steve Walsh's winning goal in the 1994 playoff final v Derby,
 - Steve Claridge's goals to win the 1996 playoff final v Palace and the 1997 League Cup Final replay v Middlesbrough,
 - Matt Elliott's 2 headers to win the 2000 League Cup Final v Tranmere.

Youri Tielemans may not have done much in his last 2 years, but he's got that FA Cup Final goal in 2021 for him to be remembered by.

Some not-so-good players are also remembered for great things eg:
 - Joe Water's 2 goals on his debut in the 1974 FA Cup Quarter final at QPR,
 - Tony James's goal v Oxford in 1991 to avoid relegation to the 3rd Division,
 - Richard Smith injury time winner v Palace in 1992 to secure our first FA Cup win in 7 years.

Some good players are remembered for terrible mistakes eg:
 - Ian Wilson was a good midfielder for us, but his most memorable moment was a hideous own goal in the 1982 FA Cup Semi Final.

And just as goals scored at the end of a match, are generally more memorable than one scored early on ... so your lasting memory of a player can be what they did at the end of their time at your club.

And unfortunately many fans, possibly even most, will remember Maddison for two moments:  A terrible back-pass that gifted Bournemouth victory, and a saved penalty that would probably have kept us up.  That's not really fair on his generally very good 5 years at our club.   But life's not fair, and that's just sometimes how it is.

Sport isn’t life though. It’s not even close. It’s just a leisure activity. If you’re a teenager with no responsibilities and never lost a loved one I get it, but I’m baffled how grown adults can get so bitter towards people for how they performed in a football shirt or how they posted innocuous social media posts relating to football. Life is too short to get more angry about relegation than enjoying winning a FA Cup from your free time activities and leisure activities. There’s so many more things in the world to get worked up about.

Well, you've gone off on a bit of a tangent there.

I was just pointing out that life isn't fair, and you can get remembered for things that don't necessarily reflect your overall contribution.

The world cup was in December. He downed tools as much as anyone else after that

After reading a few of your comments it’s clear that you’ve never played football. ‘Downing tools’ is such a blasé comment from fickle fans who believe that just because a player isn’t performing at their highest level they don’t give a toss - which is absurd.
The vast majority of our players last season played the ball sideways or back with absolutely zero intention of making anything happen - Madders was the opposite. Because of the player he is, on occasions he is going to lose the ball but that’s not through lack of effort.
As far as I’m concerned I’ll always regard Madders as one of our top tier players and wish him all the best - just a shame he chose Spurs!

You're entitled to your opinion. I don't agree

Drinkwater was always good for us, even in 16/17 he was one of few players that could hold their head up high, I never considered he "downed tools". The way he left was shocking but his performances never dropped prior to that. Mahrez went on a sulk but I wouldn't say he "downed tools" on the pitch, he still scored 12 league goals and ended up being our second highest goalscorer that season.

Pre world cup was a third of the season. He wasn't the main culprit but he also publicly defended Rodgers after the 6-2 at Spurs too, something he didn't have to do so I'm not overly sympathetic.

Should we hold a minutes applause for him during today's game you know, to give some of you lot a chance to wish him a happy birthday like🙄
