Any other FoxesTalkers also do any coaching in their spare time?

Next season, starting in March here I’m taking on my first senior men’s coaching role, and whilst excited also a bit nervous. I was wondering if we had any other coaches maybe Ruuds on here? Or local Sunday League team, or any level.

Anyone want to share any tips, videos, ideas or progress you are making as a coach.

Maybe even organise a friendly or two for those in a similar area, or anyone looking to come out for a preseason tour of Melbourne.

I do.
started off with young lads that were discarded by two other teams from the same club. Excepted the challenge to give my middle boy a chance to play in a team, as he had zero experience, like the majority of the others.

We played one preseason friendly against one of the other teams that didn’t want any of these players. They absolutely battered us, and didn’t take their foot off the gas for one moment. They celebrated every single goal as if they’d just won a major trophy. I didn’t want any favours, but I didn’t expect the management from the same set up, to be so brutal against lads that had been training with them, not so long ago.

Straight in to matches and I knew even starting at the bottom level, that you will be coming up against teams that have been together for two or three years. They will have the experience and reasonable technique, know positions etc.

We were starting with none of that, and no goal keeper…

Done a fair bit of coaching, men, women and kids, and the toughest was the kids, not the kids themselves, but their parents.

Good luck, be prepared for the night before to be ruined while you procrastinate over your starting 11 (assuming you have a few subs) understand for some lads it’s a social thing and don’t bollock them if they break your intended shape or don’t follow instructions all the time, those lads are more likely to be your flair players who will turn a game.

Most of all, try and enjoy it. There’s always going to be 2 or 3 in any group of 15 who think you are a tw@t and can do better, there’s also 2 or 3 who will run through walls for you from day one.

Just started grass roots mini football myself. Has kind of been thrust upon me as the previous 2 coaches jacked it in at xmas.

Its been an interesting start to say the least. One parent has wanted more game time for their son, I'd literally seen 1 training session and 1 match! The kids seem fine, its the parents that are going to kill any enjoyment with this aint it.

The parents are probably the worst part of it!

Ran a Sunday side for 4 seasons. Got to a few cup finals (lost them all) and came 2nd in the league every season. Really enjoyed it, even when we were scraping 11 lads together at the last minute on Sunday mornings. Then had a season and a half running a senior league team until I couldn’t really commit to it fully anymore.

Will be taking my son’s team with another parent next season when they’re old enough to play league games. Looking forward to that.

Regarding any tips I think a lot of it depends on how serious the level is. But don’t let anyone take the piss.

Very true ! I coached the same youth side at Harborough Town for about 4 seasons, a few years ago......had a great rapport with the parents & they were always respectful, apart from this 1 couple who thought their lad was Lionel Messi & should be at a better team/club.

They didn't mix with anyone, very strange couple. The son was fine, he just wanted to play football.

Seems I'm off to a rocky start. 3 departed, with more to follow I suspect!

Feedback has all been positive from the parents, so I'm really at a loss as to what it could be right now. More as we get it.

You’ll find players will come and go, and parents not being truthful about what’s happening.

What team in Melbourne mate? I’ll make sure I’ll come protest against how you’re running the team.

Interested in getting into coaching when my little one has it forced upon him

Started at 17 in Sunday League - now 34 this year and said Sunday League team is still going, however last couple years I am chairman instead of manager. Ages 16 - however old!

Managed Saturday Football from park pitches to non league, now currently assistant manager at Quorn in Step 4 of the Pyramid

Also coaching after school where I work, with Yr 7 - Sixth Form

Crammed in a lot of experience, so if you need any pointers or advice, don't hesitate to drop me a message.
