Oh come on. So you think it's acceptable for the club to say "yeah funds are available" to a manager at the interview stage, then a couple of months later go "yeah we only meant for loans haha gotcha"?

I don't know exactly what the club said to RvN during the interview process because I wasn't there. How do you know?

Besides, as I said, I don't think the issue is that we don't have the money to buy players. I think it's because our position in the table makes recruitment very difficult.

I’d rather buy nobody than get another Faes, Tete or VK. Maybe nobody with quality wants to come here

No-one is, even Villa are selling and theyre in the last 16 in the Euro thing. PSR has crippled everyone and the only players out there are duds.

Villa bought Malen for £20m last week. But they've also sold players for a profit this window - Duran most recently but Philogene went to Ipswich for £20m - Villa know what they're doing now.

Haha here we go.

No I wasn't, but luckily Ruud was and he spoke about it directly and was quoted on it.

So you’re basing your assumption that Ruud was lied to on a one-word answer he gave to a question in a press conference? Has he since confirmed that the club has changed its mind and told him no funds are available? If so I must have missed it…

I guess you missed the follow up question.

You mean the one that he answered by saying:

“We spoke about that, the winter window, and also towards the summer. We also said that there’s no rush to do things.”

Yeah. So he's been told there are funds available for signings in January and moving towards the summer.

Right now, with Cannon and Hamza going and Woyo coming in, we're slightly above net zero spend. Hardly backing up words with actions are we.

Most likely because, as I’ve stated, the kind of players we need right now very likely won’t sign for us on permanent deals given the high risk of relegation.

Im not really buying the “we are a hard sell” narrative. We are to an extent.

But are you telling me there aren’t players who play in the positions we need playing in obscure leagues overseas that wouldn’t jump at the chance to sign for us? Championship clubs have luck in that market. We aren’t going to attract top tier talent, or be able to spend silly amounts, but we can do some business.

Do you really want us to spend money on unproven players in obscure leagues that may turn out to be crap and impossible to get off the wage bill because nobody else will take them? Has our recent record in the transfer market not taught you anything at all?!

It's easier to sell talents that were bought for cheap from obscure leagues on low wages than it is to sell experienced older players on high wages bought for millions of pounds.

You have things the wrong way round.

And almost invariably, with hilarious results...

Can't wait for the fax machine jokes, really does make me belly laugh each time. Such good banter :vardy:

Everytime I login and view the latest posts you can guarantee there's always one thread with the words '14 seconds or fax machine'.

Tedious.

Oh sure, because there is a tried-and-tested, foolproof way of ensuring that players plucked from obscure leagues turn out to be 'talents' with solid resale value rather than duds who have no incentive to leave because they know that nobody else will match their wages...

Look I get the frustration - we clearly badly need to improve the squad. I'm just baffled that some people apparently find it impossible to comprehend just how difficult it is for a club in our position to recruit the quality players we need in the January transfer window. There is a reason why so little business is done this month - it's because there is so little value in the market. And if you add the very real risk of relegation into the equation, it becomes even harder.

Like everybody else I really hope Woyo turns out to be a good 'un, but we've clearly taken a punt there. We didn't exactly seem to be fighting off much competition for his signature...

We got most of our money back on Diabate even after he flopped for us. After Vardy's first bad year for us we still could have made our money back. It's basic economics, there's always a larger market for cheaper players as more clubs can afford them. If a £15mil players doesnt perform for us only other PL sides are in a position to take them off our hands.

If we spend £1mil on the biggest talent from the Swedish league or some up and coming youngster in the Eredivisie then we make our money back 95% of the time even if it doesnt work out.

But this is my whole point. An up and coming youngster from one one those leagues would usually be regarded as one for the future and given time to settle in & develop. What we need right now are players who will come straight into our first team and immediately improve it. Unfortunately those players are hard to come by.

I find it a bit odd that people clamber for signings - not disagreeing we don't need some desperately but there is literally no point bringing anyone in that wont improve our XI or we may aswell of kept the likes of Hamza.

Players that would improve our XI are likely already shining for their own clubs, so become less obtainable for obvious reasons mid season.

Not an easy market to navigate even with a competent DOF and team below.

And we won't throw ridiculous money at them to get them to put their reservations aside. That path led us here in the first place!
