We did such a poor job of moving which only adds to the frustration. We had to move or expand, unfortunately the latter option wasn't available so building a new ground was the only way forward.

Sadly we went for the cheapest, blandest option of the identikit bowl. Most of the comments here reference the different seats, the concourse, the steps, the stands towering over and coming into view. What now? The stands and concourses look the same. Nothing stands out. A genuine wasted opportunity.

Shame that the Carling Stand was never incorporated into the new ground, especially given the fact that it wasn't even 10 years old at the time. I always wondered they ever bothered building the Carling Stand especially if the plan was for a new ground. Unless they'd been given word they'd be able to redevelop Filbert Street so never expected to move?

The plan was always to stay. The preferred option was to rotate the ground  90 degrees and build a new main stand on Filbert St. Burnmoor St but the locals and a councillor campaign strongly against claiming a loss of light for the remining houses on Burnmoor St.

Even the best move option on Bede island was blocked by the houses on Western Road, We were extremely fortunate to end up where we did as planning permission had already been given to Morrisons but they let it lapse otherwise we'd have been at Fosse Park, Glenfield or Beaumont Lees.

I think this was the image at the time for Bede island

It really such a shame we never stayed I'd of much preferred that. We should of incorporated bits of Filbert Street at the current ground. Carling Stand and the members stand, even if the members stand was incorporated as sort of like gates. Whatever happened to the members stand anyone know? Would certainly of been interesting where they'd of built a stadium in either of Fosse Park, Glenfield or Beaumont Leys though.

The new main stand replaced the members stand

I was in the main stand that day which was unusual for me, sat overlooking pen 4 where a fair few Sheffield Utd fans had got into. Recall loads of the old baby squad around me trying to get at them, they stuffed us 2-5 I think?!

What sticks in my mind from that day was SheffU fans celebrating promotion on the pitch. After they eventually returned to the stands, they came back on to celebrate when it was announced that SheffWed had been relegated!

I’m thinking Marc North ended up in goal too? Honestly can’t remember too much about it, but up there with the Newcastle game in the early 90s when Walshie scored at both ends for mad crowds.

too soon 😫

The smell of sweaty hot dogs and onions, cigar smoke and a whiff of something strong from some old guys hip-flask.

Pleat out, don’t go Martin, Bovril.

What a place.

The stink of stale piss from the toilets at the back.

Bonfires on The Kop on really cold days.

Spotting the away fans and getting out the way before they kicked off.

Not spotting the away fans (West Ham) and being in the smelly bogs at the back when they kicked off.

Villa riot

Chelsea taking the Kop.

We were in the corner of the Main Stand Enclosure, with a few tasty looking older lads.

The Sheff Utd fans were told in simple language they understood, that their continued good health, depended on them removing themselves out of our end.

They took one look at us, decided discretion was the better part of valour, and begged the stewards to let them out the front, and to the away end.

I thought the plan was to extend the South stand (kop) and have the other big stand on Filbert Street which as you so was blocked for lack of light .

In hindsight we could’ve done a Liverpool and bought all the houses on Burnmoor and Filbert street and extend that way !

Remember it as I was sat with my then girlfriend in that corner of the main stand, it was her first game and she was scared by it all. Remember them in Pen 4, vague memories of them being let out and into Pen 1.

You're correct I should have said Filbert St not Burnmoor St.

They'd owned nearly all the houses on Burnmoor in the late 60s/70s but sold them then bought most of them back except one I believe. Rumour has it they paid more for each house than the got when they sold all of them.

They should have at least salvage this for the new stadium site.

Wonder if we could incorporate it if we ever expand the stadium? Think it'll still get incorporated into the Filbert Street development?

Couldn't expand kop end due to the sub station behind it. Also the outlining of the old ground you have done I'd missing the car park which would of been part of the pitch.

Sure the club owned alot of the houses years ago but a few wouldn't sell.

I don't who owns it now. I would guess the developers of the land rather than the club.

I think the South stand had a big enough footprint to build a larger stand in its  space and then build large single tier stands on Burnmoor and Filbert street. Also keeping the Carling stand .

I'd like to think we'd have a better atmosphere now and still have a decent capacity.

If we'd have gone down that route I'm sure KP would have been inclined to go for a brand new stadium in the sticks as that would be the only place they'd find the space.

Like a punch to the stomach seeing those.

I regularly dream that I'm back there watching the match from my season ticket seat on the second row of the Family Stand in the orange seats.

Seeing those pictures of the concourse in the double decker where my Dad took me to my first games hits hard.

Sounds dramatic but I get quite cut up if I think about it too much that I'll never be able to go back.

Have found some photos. The quality of the photography leaves a lot to be desired but I'll try and put a few up. 😆
