davieG Posted 24 December 2005 Share Posted 24 December 2005 Or a word to that effect From Sky: A disgruntled Dennis Wise has followed Dave Bassett through the St Mary's exit door, Southampton revealed on Saturday. The news comes just a day after The Saints unveiled George Burley as the successor to the Portsmouth-bound Harry Redknapp. Wise was also interviewed for the vacancy but chairman Rupert Lowe's decision to opt for Burley appears not to have sat well with the former Millwall manager. Lowe revealed to the club's official website that he was disappointed by Wise's reaction and felt it was in the best interests of both parties to release the player with immediate effect. "Dennis has not behaved well and the fact he has taken it with bad grace shows we made the right decision," confirmed an adamant Lowe. Lowe also insisted that he had never offered the manager's job to Wise despite the latter's assertions to the contrary. "We always made it clear he was not guaranteed the job and I asked him if he would be prepared to carry on as a player if he did not get it," added Lowe. "He said he would be happy to continue playing as long as the new manager wanted him so no way was he misled."

MC Prussian Posted 24 December 2005 Share Posted 24 December 2005 Lowe accuses Wise of sour grapes Dennis Wise's Southampton career looks to be over after chairman Rupert Lowe accused him of "sour grapes". Wise, 39, is said to be furious that Lowe snubbed him and Dave Bassett for the manager's job in favour of George Burley and Sir Clive Woodward. Lowe told the club website: "He has not behaved well and the fact he has taken it with bad grace shows it's the right decision. It smacks of sour grapes. "He said he was assured the job but that isn't true." Lowe added: "Dennis was given a proper interview with Guy Askham and me along with several other candidates. "The board had to make sure we were happy with his coaching and leadership credentials and compare him with the other options. "We always made it clear he was not guaranteed the job and I asked him if he would be prepared to carry on as a player if he did not get it. "He said he would be happy to continue playing as long as the new manager wanted him so no way was he misled." Thracian Posted 24 December 2005 Share Posted 24 December 2005 Denis Wise is typical of the jobs for the boys brigade in football. He was never a great player (or a great example) and what has he achieved as a manager to make him Premiership material? He just seems to lack the class for the job as the original story shows and yet someone, somewhere will always give him another opening cos, to use a Harry Rednapp phrase: "he's a football man".
