FOXES JOIN THE HUNT FOR AMBITIOUS LINCOLN DEFENDER MCAULEY

08:30 - 29 December 2005 Leicester City have been linked with a move for Imps defender Gareth McAuley.

It is understood the Championship club are considering a swoop for the Northern Ireland international, who is out of contract next summer.

Foxes boss Craig Levein is on the lookout for a defender and has previously shown an interest in the 25-year-old.

But the Scot will have to fend off competition from fellow Championship side Crewe and League One Doncaster Rovers to capture his signature.

Lincoln are believed to want offers in excess of £50,000 for the defender, who is able to start negotiations with other clubs once the January transfer window re-opens next week.

Imps boss Keith Alexander is resigned to losing McAuley after claiming the player has rejected the chance to begin negotiations on a new contract.

Alexander says he has made countless phone calls to McAuley's agent, Mel Eves, but none of them have been returned.

Even if McAuley does discuss a new contract, City's offer to make him one of their highest paid players may still not be good enough.

The 6ft 4in stopper is worried about his international career after Northern Ireland boss Lawrie Sanchez told him his chances of a first-team place are bleak while he is playing in League Two.

He is, therefore, desperate to get out of the division and has stated he would love to achieve promotion with Lincoln.

However, the lack of quality signings at City has concerned £150,000-rated McAuley, who questioned the club's ambition in the Echo earlier this month.

Since arriving at Sincil Bank from Coleraine in a £10,000 deal last August, McAuley has made 61 appearances and scored seven goals for the Imps.

Assuming Dublin doesn't stay past this season.

That's 5 centre backs, do we need another one?

Probably, so that we can play with a "Levein formation" (i.e. a defender-only team, with possibly a lone striker, when he feels like it) :P

The one thing you can say about Levein is that if he's not happy with a player, he will ship them out whether he signed them or not. Gilbert has learnt this first hand. The buying of another centreback suggests to me that maybe Nils-Eric Johansson could be on his way out after being completely dropped last night and previously throughout the season.

However, maybe I'm just being a journalist and putting two and two together.

I've heard rumours linking a Championship club with the hearts keeper Craig Gordon although apparently its the Scummers rather than CL off to try and sign some more of his mates.

The scots rave about him, but if big rab is anything to go by, there idea of good keepers is a lot different to mine ?

Lincoln

Craig is going for it now!!!

He never seems to learn does he? If you keep signing players from these lower, inferior clubs you'll end up being the standard of those clubs yourself. Here we are in the jaws of relegation and.....we're linked with yet another.
