4-1 mullering and you realistically have no chance of getting through in 3rd place without a win and a draw in the other game, tight goal difference and the odds are in your favour. The format is very appealing to sufferball Steves attritional style

I'm in no way a fan of Clarke's style of football or over cautious decisions but there is no way fans would rather see attractive football and a 4-1 humping than crap football and achieving something your nation never has by getting to the next round

Didnt realise you could still get through with a win and  2 defeats.

That's truly shocking in itself!

85% chance if it's two 1-0 defeats, 4-1 humping and you're looking 56% at best.

There really are a lot of English triggered by the fact the Scottish fans are popular when they travel

Are they? Every post i see is Scotland fans telling everyone how loved they are as appose to other countries fans saying it. But when you are that bad at football you need something to claim as an achievement

I mean, in a fortnight the tartan army have managed to get Boston to twin with Glasgow and had the state of Massachusetts symbolically legalise haggis ... locals clearly love them

I mean the basketball team is literally called the Boston Celtics. There are many people whose family routes date back to Scotland and Ireland already living there. Its not exactly two different cultures colliding

Isn't this just the Universe balancing itself??

On the one hand, you have England, one of the tournament favourites but followed by a fan base with a problematic behavioural history and..

Scotland, largely a terrible team but supported by arguably the best fans (so proud of them)

The funny thing is, why are England fans constantly bothered by this??  Weird!

I don’t know where this idea has come from that England fans are hooligans but Scottish fans are loveable. Has no one heard of the Glasgow derby?

Scottish fans are liked for behaviour like jumping into fountains and excessive alcohol consumption, which England fans would be called disrespectful and embarrassing for.

I swear something like this gets written about Brazil in every tournament.

What do these journalists thing the real Brazil is? I mean, look at their players. They're a bit mid.

Correct. The press always want or expect them to be vintage Brazil 1970. The 1982 Brazil was the closest they ever came to the 1970 side but they went out in the QF's.

This may be a fair point, but we are talking about international football and there is no denying the 'English Disease' was well quoted in years gone by.

It is interesting that you provide an example of exactly what I'm talking about.. maybe this is something to do with media sensationalism nevertheless  I'm absolutely certain that not all England fans are hooligans as much as not all Scotland fans are lovable.

there's not really a club element to the international fan base though. Domestically yes, the old firm in particular have a hooligan problem but that's not taken into the tartan army. It's kinda the nature of tribalism, the borders get larger if you've got a wider opponent: it's hearts v hibs until it's England v Scotland, it's England v Scotland until the yanks start bad mouthing this island...

While that's also true of england - you don't really hear of e.g. West Ham and millwall fans scrapping in an england end - the travelling England fans do still have that reputation to them globally.

I think England fans are disliked now as much because of English media as any memories of the bad old hooligan days. People obviously speak English and watch our media so they are familiar with the kind of discourse that goes on - the constant refrain of "wouldn't get in the England team" about half the squad of a country who then shit all over us, the questions like "what can you do Kasper to stop it coming home?", the belittling of other countries. Obviously this isn't really the fans fault but there is a general feeling that the English see themselves as the centre of the football world around which everything else revolves. We are basically the "this means more" Liverpool of the international scene.

People just need to accept that the group stages are just an extension to qualifying in this tournament. It'll be time to start paying attention when we get to the last 16.

Everything before that is fluff to make Infantino happy.

Agree, can still remember how the media, commentators and pundits got excited by an average Brazil side making them favourites in 2014, the way Germany took them apart in the semi final stuffing them 7-1 was a thing of beauty.
