Deathside Posted 18 March 2006 Posted 18 March 2006 After a lot of head scratching I came up with this list - I've included country of origin as I guess the majority of Foxstalkers will not have heard of most of these? Driller Killer - Reality Bites (Sweden) GISM - DETESTation (Japan) Turbonegro - Apocolypse Dudes (Norway) The Haunted - Made Me Do It (Sweden) Anti Cimex - Absolut Country Of Sweden (Sweden) Bastard - No Hope In Here (Japan) Newtown Neurotics - Beggars Can Be Choosers (UK) Dag Nasty - Can I Say (US) The Ruts - The Crack (UK) Discharge - Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing (UK) Social Distortion - Sex, Love And Rock 'n' Roll (US) Standard disclaimer: Albums are not listed in order of preference I reserve the right to change my mind at the drop of a hat I've listed 11 albums but I'm sure no one will notice

Jordan Posted 22 March 2006 Posted 22 March 2006 After a lot of head scratching I came up with this list - I've included country of origin as I guess the majority of Foxstalkers will not have heard of most of these? I haven't heard most of those but I've heard some of those bands. The first thing that jumps out at me is that you've picked "Apocalypse Dudes" over "Ass Cobra." While Apocalypse Dudes is indeed a fine album, but man, Ass Cobra is a masterpiece. My rule of thumb on Turbonegro is that the more homoerotic the song lyrics are, the better the song quality (all of those unfamiliar with the band are probably giving their computers a weird look right now ). I haven't heard that Discharge album but I've got a few Discharge 7-inches on my computer courtesy of the good folks at www.7inchpunk.com. I haven't heard much that distinguishes them from other early English hardcore acts but there's one song in particular that stands out among the rest--"Decontrol." I don't mind Social Distortion but I wouldn't say I'm a fan--I've actually never given them a throrough listening.

In truth there's not a lot between Apocolypse Dudes and Ass Cobra - Both could have graced my top 10 - A best of compilation of the 2 albums would be the ultimate Decontrol was the first Discharge record I heard / bought - Very basic but good Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say nothing was a real step forward - It's IMHO the absolute birthplace of british hardcore and it totally influenced a generation of bands especially in Scandinavia - I think without Discharge as many as 5 albums on my list would never have happened Discharge were also a major influence on early Slayer and Metallica - Metallica have done a whole bunch of Discharge covers There has been a whole bunch of Dis bands who unashamedly continue the style of Discharge: These included Dischange, Disclose, Disrupt, Disfear etc Just did a bit of googling: - This pretty much sums it up wikipedia.org - Discharge I should also mention that Extreme Noise Terror also would not have existed if Discharge hadn't happened and my favourite track I've ever recorded is a Discharge cover (No TV Sketch) which appeared on a Discharge tribute album (Discharged) From what I know of your taste in music I would strongly recommend that you acquire Hear Nothing, See Nothing, Say Nothing The Social Distortion thing is a little odd for me - Although they've been around for hundreds of years I only really started to listen to their stuff recently - and their last album just works for me - even though it's very mellow by my normal listening standards
Jordan Posted 23 March 2006 Posted 23 March 2006 I had no idea that Discharge was around that early--I had thought they were around in the mid-80s so it does change my opinion a little bit. I'll have to check out that album.
