hairy Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 I see there is no silver or golden goal this time around. Its 15 minutes each way extra time and then a penalty shoot out. While this is FIFAs preferred way of sorting it out I was wondering if what you guys thought. I never liked the silver or golden goals myself but penalty shoot outs seem not to reflect the team performance (and we keep losing them!)
Guest Gist Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 I think extra time and penalties is the best way even though we can't take them. I'd hate the thought of us going out to a Golden Goal
shen Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 Keep the extra-time going. Take off 1 player from each team every 5 minutes...
IDEA OR IKEA Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 I think extra time and penalties is the best way even though we can't take them. I'd hate the thought of us going out to a Golden Goal Golden goal for me - in this heat extra time has the possability of both teams just sitting back and it being boring. At least with Golden Goal they had an incentive to attack!
Luke_Leicester_Lad Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 Penalty shoot out for me. But on the other hand England are cr*p at them.
Ultra Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 In this day and age the powers that be will go for the option which produces the most drama, to maximus the TV audience and thus the commercial revenue. So it's going to be penalties every time...
Loake Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 penalties for me, exciting, even if we do lose them loads
davieG Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 If it's going to be penalties they should do away with the extra time as it serves no practical purpose.
shen Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 Golden goal for me - in this heat extra time has the possability of both teams just sitting back and it being boring. At least with Golden Goal they had an incentive to attack! Or the complete opposite, another incentive to shut up shop. Because in this day and age, it's all about not losing, and not about winning. That's effectively why the Golden Goal was scrapped for the Silver Goal.
Tommeh Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 i agree penalties are best to watch when your teams not involved, but i'll take golden goal. Can't bear to watch England in the semi final on penalties
Nationwider Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 As crap as it is, I'd stick with extra time and penalties. Regardless, I'm in favour of all players chasing Sepp Blatter around the pitch with sticks and pitchforks after every game. It doesn't resolve the match, but would be good for football in general.
Thracian Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 Russian roulette. That would liven things up and give players a sense of urgency during the 90 minutes.
The People's Hero Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 eXTRA time but after every 2 minutes, withdraw one player per side. Repeat every 2 minutes until a goal is scored.
Nationwider Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 eXTRA time but after every 2 minutes, withdraw one player per side. Repeat every 2 minutes until a goal is scored. Sounds interesting. I'd like to see that in practice.
Daggers Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 Dress one team up as giant foam milkmaids from Holland, get the other team to become large foam cows. It is the milkmaids job to cross the rickety bridge [being shaken by the cow team] over the European milk lake to collect urns full of white stuff. Then they have to climb over an assault course while the cows pelt them with huge rubber wheels of cheese. Eddie Waring will be exhumed and Stuart Hall's head will explode. The team that played their joker wins.

The team that played their joker wins. The brilliance is in it's simplicity. I've got this eerie image of Ronaldo in a blonde pigtails and a frock in my head now. Seriously though, isn't that basically just the early stages of the Intertoto Cup?
Daggers Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 Seriously though, isn't that basically just the early stages of the Intertoto Cup? Nope. You are confusing the It's An Intertoto Knockout with the brilliant idea that is Jeux Sans Solving Dull Draws Frontiers. Obviously, the Intertoto has many laughable aspects to it [making it ideal for livening up dull 0-0 draws] but I needed to adapt it to the global stage by using more foam costumes. Ronaldo is going to be in charge of the extra-time half-time pie eating contest.
Head Honcho Posted 13 June 2006 Posted 13 June 2006 I went for penalties, but if I had my way I'd award the three points to the team with most shots on target during the match
Daggers Posted 14 June 2006 Posted 14 June 2006 I went for penalties, but if I had my way I'd award the three points to the team with most shots on target during the match Everyone knows footy players love their cars - so how about fixed penalties? Then you can give three points on a driving licence to every player not having had a shot at goal in the last five minutes, every five minutes. This means that during extra time a player runs the risk of losing their licence and would face an extended test in order to regain their ticket to speed. The extended driving test could include hill starts, emergency kit change and singing the National Anthem properly.
Tommeh Posted 14 June 2006 Posted 14 June 2006 eXTRA time but after every 2 minutes, withdraw one player per side. Repeat every 2 minutes until a goal is scored. Thats what happens a some 7- a side tournaments, i saw one which was left just keepers and one player not full size pitch though obviously
DanTheFoxBhoy Posted 14 June 2006 Posted 14 June 2006 If it's going to be penalties they should do away with the extra time as it serves no practical purpose. I think it gives both teams a little more time to at least break the dead-lock. Sure they've had 90 mins already, but there's always the chance of a Stevie Claridge coming through for his team Then shoot outs... kind of raps up the volatile nature of the sport!
DanTheFoxBhoy Posted 14 June 2006 Posted 14 June 2006 Thats what happens a some 7- a side tournaments, i saw one which was left just keepers and one player not full size pitch though obviously Does English Rugby League do 15 mins + 15 mins, first team to score wins? Reminds me of the 30 min extension in soccer, but without the first score rule. More fair I think in football - if a team is able to equalise in the remaining time then there's an argument that shoot outs decide the match.
macbeth Posted 14 June 2006 Posted 14 June 2006 penalties are a joke ; its like deciding a drawn chess match with arm wrestling; the outcome of a game of football should be football , you could just as logically decide the outcome with a keepy up challenge; it should be golden goal and players gradually reduced as was already suggested
