davieG Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 Does anyone on here REALLY believe that we have a chance of winning this thing? I don't and I can't say I've enjoyed any of the England games.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 Joe Cole looks like he's breaking his ankle there, and that's the bloody goal! Err no I don't think we can win it. Argentina look like Brazil 1970. And compared to us they look like... err... a team better than Brazil 1970.
The People's Hero Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 No. I bet England fans come up with good excuses
Head Honcho Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 They obviously have to play better but it's Ecuador on Sunday and probably Holland or Portugal in the 1/4 finals. Reaching the Semi-final is a possibility, after that who know's?
Tommeh Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 I havn't waited 4 Years to admit defeat after a draw to our bogey team, WE STILL BELIEVE!!!
Master Fox Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 I havn't waited 4 Years to admit defeat after a draw to our bogey team, WE STILL BELIEVE!!! I believe in the tooth fairy, nothing else!
Master Fox Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 I believe in the monster under my bed... So that's where all of my booze has gone
Daggers Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 I believe in the monster under my bed... sod the monster, he's pissed, you should be trying to get jiggy with the girl under your bed...
dandannieldanok Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 Of course we can win it, we are still in it aren't we. I know we have been poor to say the least but favorites from the outset Brazil have been as bad if not worst. As for Argentina, well the 6-0 is a farce in this world cup. After half time Serbia were shot it and were not fully right in the head. Moreover the supposed best goal of the tournament was just 20 passes of rolling the ball at a slow pace 5 yards to one another without any major pressure from Serbia players. The passing in the move was similar to what England have been moaned at for.
Thracian Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 I think we've got a chance DavieG, albeit it a slim one.. a) Right now we are still in the competition. b) Apart from Argentina and Ghana I've not been especially impressed with anyone (of those I've seen) . c) We have some good and some experienced players if by a miracle we ever use them in an effective manner collectively. d) Other teams are cautious of us (as well as vice-versa) so if they get in front, they might react like us and try to hold out thus giving us a chance even when we're unde pressure. e) We will surely improve as a team (that's more in hope than expectation). All that said I don't think Sven is the kind of inspiring type of manager our players need. His squad selection left us vulnerable, he is not a "to die for" person and whatever he wants underneath he just doesn't seem to have the personality to be anything other than cautious as a football manager. In a strange way football is like mountain sports in the end. To reach the top sooner or later you have to take risks and lay your professional life on the line. The question with Sven is does he have the bottle, not to mention the intelligence, to win?.
Mort Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 No, unless we improve drastically Ditto... I hope last night and Owen's injury wake the team up, the Semi's remain a realistic goal (no pun intended!) and once you get to that stage who knows what can happen... things looked so good for us in the first half last night! (if you dont include Owen's injury ) what the hell happened?
Bert Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 Typical English. Can't get behind their team no matter what. it's getting boring now with people slagging our own players off.
MC Prussian Posted 21 June 2006 Posted 21 June 2006 Typical English. Can't get behind their team no matter what. it's getting boring now with people slagging our own players off. Thing is, people are complaining about the players the coach has chosen to represent the country at the WC. Not particularely the players' fault, rather a worrying decision by Sven the Wannabe-Man. Taking an unfit Rooney with him, nominating a rookie like Walcott, an injury-prone striker like Owen (poor lad), and playing Lampard, Gerrard and Beckham together, an experiment that has gone wrong in all three group stage games. Plus, the defenders, especially in the centre, look shaky. Positive surprises so far have been both Coles, Robinson, Hargreaves. But then again, they might get rid of all those issues with the Ecuador game. You never know.
Ultra Posted 22 June 2006 Posted 22 June 2006 Typical English. Can't get behind their team no matter what. it's getting boring now with people slagging our own players off. The fact is that they deserve the criticism they have had to date. How many times has our captain (surely the most overhyped player EVER) failed to deliver in big tournaments? Only yesterday he was mouthing off to the media about how he and the team will win the cup "for Michael". Although the target is still attainable, both he and Sven will have to show a lot more leadership than they've managed so far.
Daggers Posted 22 June 2006 Posted 22 June 2006 Positive surprises so far have been both Coles Who he? Surely not Richard, the great pianist from The Communards, brother of my mate Will?!
MC Prussian Posted 22 June 2006 Posted 22 June 2006 Who he? Surely not Richard, the great pianist from The Communards, brother of my mate Will?! Not at all, I was rather thinking of my cousin Vince and his father-in-law, Gregory. They're the best Coles you can imagine. Unrivaled.
macbeth Posted 22 June 2006 Posted 22 June 2006 we will win this competition despite the handicap of a useless coach as did germany when the kaiser effectively took over as unofficial manager when he was captain all we need is an english beckenbaur.............. beckham/beckenbaur surely no coincidence dump the swede
