Nationwider Posted 1 July 2006 Posted 1 July 2006 I'm sure a lot of posters will already carry a card or be on the Organ Donor Register, but if you've never got round to it, or have had doubts about it, click HERE to have a read about the subject and sign up. You can sign up if you're under 16, but you'll need the consent of a parent/guardian to donate organs or tissue, should the situation arise. Changes to the law later this year will make it less easy for someone (a relative etc) to veto your decision to donate, should you wish to give an organ. Nevertheless, its a good idea to tell your relatives of your wishes - hundreds of transplants each year are never carried out because relatives, unaware of a deceased's wishes, fail to agree to donate. Sermon over.
macbeth Posted 1 July 2006 Posted 1 July 2006 so long as its between consenting adults ; i'm all for organ donations
SystonFox Posted 1 July 2006 Posted 1 July 2006 i would happilly give my organs if i were to have an accident and die but i am sceptical about carrying a card on me as if i crash my car and end up on life support, part of me thinks they wont be so bothered cos they know my kidneys/heart/lungs etc will be going to a usefull place whereas i may just end up brain damaged or something. i dont want that to happen

SystonFox Posted 1 July 2006 Posted 1 July 2006 they are fairly usefull i think... but if im laying on a hospital bed with my body in pieces due to a horrific car crash and a small chance of life they might be quicker to turn off my machine if they know they could spoon me out and chuck it in someone else.
Cobbo Posted 1 July 2006 Posted 1 July 2006 Cheers NW, I'm one of those who would let folks take anything they wanted but never signed up.
Thracian Posted 1 July 2006 Posted 1 July 2006 I don't think there's anything left of me which wouldn't be considered past its sell by date. Even a comatose patient might choose to take his chances rather than labouring under the handicap that my bits would give him. I'm not saying my knees are bad but if the few girls I've met in my sheltered life had all given way so easily I have had the life to Casanova. Sadly they mostly had more sense. My heart and lungs might manage a few more golf rounds but I doubt they'd cope with the Kama Sutra and I'm sure my liver has to be about 80 per cent proof by now. Medical analysis and research though? They're welcome but if they syphoned my blood they might have to register it as intoxicating if taken by mouth. I remember asking a girl once if she fancied a quickie or long drawn out and she said "I suppose a quickie comes with a head of froth!". "Certainly does if you shake the bottle," I replied.
macbeth Posted 1 July 2006 Posted 1 July 2006 i don't want to think about dying today can i donate some metatarsals so that top english players can keep some spare
Monk Posted 1 July 2006 Posted 1 July 2006 Very good post mate glad to see it. I had Kidney Failure 6 yrs ago and was very lucky to get a transplant off my dad, but while I was on dialysis for a year I met a heck of a lot of people who have been waiting years and years with an awful quality of life. Sure you dont want to think about dying but it is worth it seriously because there are some awfully ill people out there who have to put needles into their wrists for 4 hrs 3 or 4 times a week. It aint pretty I tell thee.
Daggers Posted 1 July 2006 Posted 1 July 2006 I will give my body to science If medical science will have me They can take my lungs and kidneys But my heart belongs to Daphne Daphne!

Monk Posted 1 July 2006 Posted 1 July 2006 Sorry - edited my original response. Have PM'd you. Nice one. I should get a card I must say. I have 3 kidneys anyway!
Nationwider Posted 1 July 2006 Author Posted 1 July 2006 Nice one. I should get a card I must say. I have 3 kidneys anyway! I've got four, but 3 are neither use nor ornament. The liver's in good shape though.
cisono Posted 30 August 2008 Posted 30 August 2008 Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I wanted to add something to the debate... This article: U.S. Surgeon Murders Patient to Harvest Organs for Waiting Recipient illustrates the kind of thing we are likely to see more of but which I am very keen to avoid!
Alexikokopops Posted 31 August 2008 Posted 31 August 2008 Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but I wanted to add something to the debate...This article: U.S. Surgeon Murders Patient to Harvest Organs for Waiting Recipient illustrates the kind of thing we are likely to see more of but which I am very keen to avoid! What a spectacularly misleading headline. I'm not saying what the doctor did was right, but that headline suggests he killed a perfectly healthy patient to harvest organs, which if you go on to read the article is not the case. I think this is a more accurate headline.
Monk Posted 31 August 2008 Posted 31 August 2008 Wow this is an old thread. Much older than the one I periodically resurrect! Sounds like a bad case. I don't think you could use this to argue against assumed consent or getting a donor card though. Proper regulation should keep this kind of activity to a minimum, but like Alex says, I think the article you posted seems a bit extreme, Daily Mail material.
Zingari Posted 31 August 2008 Posted 31 August 2008 it doesn't matter how many people are killed , if it saves just one life

cisono Posted 23 September 2008 Posted 23 September 2008 I am also extremely keen to avoid something like this: Kidneys Surgically Stolen from India's Poor in Kidney Transplant Racket
Unit Posted 23 September 2008 Posted 23 September 2008 I signed up to the donor card thing because of this thread AGES ago. not that my organs are any good
fox123 Posted 23 September 2008 Posted 23 September 2008 I signed up to the donor card thing because of this thread AGES ago. not that my organs are any good Ditto, I don't think my pickled kidneys will be of much use!
Alexikokopops Posted 23 September 2008 Posted 23 September 2008 I am also extremely keen to avoid something like this:Kidneys Surgically Stolen from India's Poor in Kidney Transplant Racket I am also extremely keen to avoid the increasing deaths due to increasing transplant waiting lists.
Dr The Singh Posted 23 September 2008 Posted 23 September 2008 I am also extremely keen to avoid something like this:Kidneys Surgically Stolen from India's Poor in Kidney Transplant Racket Nothing new, India's human rights records are abissmal, the poor are always exploited!!
