l444ry Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 The main problem for all this hysterical over-reaction is that too many supporters let their hearts rule their heads over the ability the club currently has. Leicester has an unproven manager with a bunch of players who are distinctly average. To compound the original error we now have many of these same supporters calling for Kelly to play some of the "kids". Perhaps Kelly should play the lot in the League Cup just to demonstrate to these ostriches what he already knows. That they are no better than other club's kids either.
MONreborn Posted 6 August 2006 Author Posted 6 August 2006 I don't think anyone's called for his head. At least not seriously. It's just hard to get that through to Ultra the first time. You called for his head after ONE match yesterday, you Hypocrite. Your the same person who thought David Connoly was worth 10 million pounds after ONE match against Stoke. Your the same person who called for his head after FIRST game in charge against Southamption. Your the same person who is living in a deleuded land where Hinckley are wold beaters, and needs to compare everything to that one match you went to. Leicester "fans" like Thracian, who I'm sure can afford a season Ticket, really piss me off. They whinge and moan about the amount of ST's sold, yet do not buy one and then think it is right to judge the b all and end all of the season after one match. DELUDED.
BartonFox Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 I've said it time and time again, we need to get behind the lads, regardless whether what's going on is right or wrong, when you signed up as being a football supporter, sticking through thick and thin came with the package. Says who? I never received the pamphlet that told me how I must support my team. "Rocking all over the world" <_<
Thracian Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 That simply isn't true. Many fans on here have asked whether he is up to the job, and have concluded the answer is no. But at least I know it's not just MY posts you fail to read properly. Some fans may have asked if he's up to the job - it would be strange if they didn't - but I don't recall anyone seriously calling for his head.

Regarding Connolly if you ask a lot you can always go down. And we got a splendid fee as it turned out. Re the Southampton Cup match I condemned Kelly for turning a wonderful opportunity into a dour exercise in defence and don't regret a single word. I often wonder about that match because of our circumstances at the time, I didn't call for his head after the Southampton match if you read the thread properly - I hoped that Stowell would take charge for a game and show him how to play a balanced attacking team. I didn't suggest Hinckley were anything other than what they were. I was only interested in how we played. And I watched stacks of matches last season, both first team, reserves and Academy and why you should think you have more right to voice an opinion because, perhaps, you go to more matches only you could explain. And, for the third time, it is not about one match. We have had the same problems for ages and why you pretend we haven't is extraordinary unless you are acting from within the club.
Thracian Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 The main problem for all this hysterical over-reaction is that too many supporters let their hearts rule their heads over the ability the club currently has. Perhaps Kelly should play the lot in the League Cup just to demonstrate to these ostriches what he already knows. That they are no better than other club's kids either. Do you mean like Southampton's teenaged left back Bale whose goal sparked a Saints revival at Derby and who's come through their youth system with a good many others. One of the big reasons George Burley's revered at Southampton is because, unlike Redknapp, he has and shows great belief in the club's youth players. He looked well phased by the hustle and bustle of Championship football! Perhaps you'll tell me who else is going to replace those who many seem to agree need replacing seeing as we're broke? That you'd suggest playing "the lot" in a Cup match simply seems to demonstrate how much you want them to fail. No-one has suggested playing "the lot" in our first team have they? The suggestion is that Sheehan might replace a limited left back, that Porter might provide the penetrative passes no-one else seems capable of playing, that Dodds would be a worthy addition to the bench based on his 60-odd goals these last two seasons (so someone mentioned) and that Gradel might be worth trying on the wing since we don't seem to have an effective winger and Gradel scored goals for fun from that position last year. And does anyone suggest using all four at once? No. But it seems you will exagerrate a point to keep the Chosen Men in place whatever the consequences for our club. Just out of interest. What would you do about our team full of "distinctly average" players?. I'm not being facetious. I'm interested. Cos if you've got better suggestions than any of the above I'll be mightily relieved.
The People's Hero Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 It's about time we started giving Luton a little more credit for their win yesterday. As both Reading and Liverpool found last season, Mike Newell has the knack of firing them up for games against bigger teams/clubs. Yesterday was no differerent. They had a game plan and it worked perfectly for them. There were similarities to what we used to do to other teams in the Premiership under MON. Too many of our players have the quality but not necessarily the attitude. With the run of away games that we have coming up, RK must put that right as soon as possible. And he CAN do it - his record last season proves that. Too many of them just aren't good enough. Extremely mediocre squad.

One of the big reasons George Burley's revered at Southampton is because, unlike Redknapp, he has and shows great belief in the club's youth players. Well that's Burley and Southampton, we're Leicester, if you don't like the fact that the whole of the youth team isn't starting every game, go and support Southampton.

One of the big reasons George Burley's revered at Southampton is because, unlike Redknapp, he has and shows great belief in the club's youth players. You can hardly claim Burley is a better manager than Redknapp though?
Ultra Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 Southampton have a youth system of proven pedigree, which goes back to Gordon Strachan's time as manager, if not before that. The myth is being spread that we too have a "golden generation" of youngsters straining at the leash for their chance in the first team, but being held back by over-cautious management. I've actually seen very little which substantiates this view. Indeed I recall reading a sober account on here of THAT Hinckley game which suggested that many of the participants were still some way short of first-team standard. As a former youth prodigy himself, as well as a distinguished youth coach, Rob Kelly will be fully aware of the dangers of throwing kids in at the deep end before they are ready. Could this actually be an area where his judgement is spot on?
Thracian Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 You can hardly claim Burley is a better manager than Redknapp though? Did I say that?
Knighton Matt Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 Did I say that? You claimed his methods were superior which is an implication in my book at least!
Bert Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 Did I say that? No, but you was basically saying Burley is doing well because he uses the youths more whereas Harry didn't do well there as he didn't use the youths.

Mark Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 As a former youth prodigy himself, as well as a distinguished youth coach, Rob Kelly will be fully aware of the dangers of throwing kids in at the deep end before they are ready. Could this actually be an area where his judgement is spot on? I wouldn't say he's right, Sheehan should be in the team considering we've no one reliable at left back. That's if he isn't demoralised after not being considered since his sending off last season. The key to bringing our youngsters through to the first team is for the tactics to be the same way from academy level, to reserve level, to first team level. So then when a youngster does get the chance to make the step up he will fit in much more easily. Southampton haven't complicated things, their youngsters know they'll get a chance when ready and have had success out of it. Is this the case at Leicester? I wouldn't say so, do we like to make things complicated or something, I just don't understand some things that go on at our club. Thracian, if someone like Levi Porter got the chance in the first team, do you think he'd have the same sort of impact as he has done in the games you've seen him in? I don't think he would, and not because he lacks the ability, but because he'll be told to do a different job to the one he's used to. Under Rob Kelly it would be to help the team being hard to beat as most important task. Weso and O'Grady haven't had a problem making the step up because they suit our style of play, but Sheehan and the likes of Porter and Gradel will have more of a problem because our team is set out in such a negative way these players would be held back from using their main attributes. In my opinion :pinch:
holly Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 And a good many of our current side are way short of first-team standard but at least there's a chance the younger guys will get better. what and our current sqaud wont? they aint all passed it yet ya no

In my opinion :pinch: Largely agree although it's funny how many players play in a certain position for the youth team and then slot into a different position in the first team when the time comes for them to progress up the ranks. Savage - striker Gerrard - right back Carragher - centre mid ...being examples off the top of my head.
Bert Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 Also Thrach, you must remember just because these players have bene good in the reserves it's becausewe were playing teams wiht the same or less less ability. Why do you think we beat Hicnkley 5-0? It wasn't because Stowell picked the team, or that the youths were playing - the answer is the league that Hinckley play in.
TAFKA Castroneves Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 The thing which sticks out for me personally about the whole Luton game was how (despite others saying this before this game) ordinary and poor our team seemed in comparison with others. I watched the other Championship games today and saw many players for many clubs who were playing exceptionally well...and all of them outclassed our players. I always thought we had some starlets at least - well we still do, but after yesterday it didn't feel like it. Dissapointing as hell. It just felt to me that we weren't a patch in comparison to the other teams I watched, the quality wasnt there...

Given that was the opposition what more could they do? But never mind. Just try to help me Bertfox. Given that we have no money to buy anyone else, how do you see us being successful with the players selected at Luton. Why do you defend the status quo? I've explained in another thread that the team which started at Luton scored 23 goals for us last season, the substitutes scored 7 and I'll allow another 6 for Kenton and Johnson making 36 all told. The mimimum we'll require for promotion around 69 historically. Crewe scored 57 last season and went down. I hope our directors realise that. Because we cannot keep overloading our team with defenders and we cannot continue to have so many missing components. As TAFKA says, other teams seem to have come on considerably. There seems every chance this year will be harder than last year. Please, please, please, say something to convince me otherwise.
bigneville Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 I'd like us to give some of the younger players a try at some point down the reason of watching the Derby Vs Southampton game today.... The best players on the pitch in my eyes where young, hungry and maybe not the best technically. But they wanted to perform and had something to prove. These included the Barnes guy up front and Saints left back Bale. Plus Wright-Phillips when he came on.. Maybe the youngsters arent the best players in the squad, but if there hungry then why not give them a go. Everything is worth a go. And i'm not saying play a full young team. But one or two here and there. Can hardly do a world of harm. For example. Porter at right midfield. O'Grady up top. Sheenan at left back. Maybe not all at once. But i'd like to see them given a go...

Stop your patronising aghhhhhh Have you ever heard of a club making the assitant take charge in order to give the manager some tips on how to pick the side? Thats a ludicrous statment. All I am saying is, give this man the next two home games at least before we launch a full scale attack. We have always been solid at home under him, only one loss in the league. We will win the next two matches, if we do no then get back to me. But I could tell form the players reactions when the goals went in they really really cared. We will win the next two matches and the top ten puch will be well underway. I cannot see Kelly standing for a performance like this again, I had the pleasure of meeting him for a chat and trust me this man knows exactly what he is doing and will not stand for poor performances like the one at Luton.

I'm not bothered about what happened last season now mate, i'm more bothered about this season. My favourite pair of boxers don't fit me any more, but you don't see me moaning about that.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 Results are a better yardstick than how many goals players scored last season. If you want to judge Kelly on his results as manager, then he is a great manager. If you want to judge him on this season, then he is rubbish after one game obviously but deserves time this season considering his overall record so far. As I explained previously, you can win two games 1-0 then lose one 2-0, have a neutral goal difference and still win the league. How on earth you offer a critique of this man without mentioning his WDL record as manager is beyond me.
