Anything more to read into this as this caused such a debate in the week !!!

But he still got some good crosses in... especially the one Huuuume should have scored from (where he hit the post!). But also I believe he was playing to orders, because he was coming back beyond the halfway line far too often, and wasn't the outlet he has been recently!

When Weso's fit it's a good call but I'm still not convinced he's fully fit yet. I think we'll all have to be patient for a little longer. Non of us want him to suffer another setback and Hughes' engine may well be important at West Brom. Weso on the bench would be prudent for now but don't I look forward to the day when he's right back to his confident battling self and all those assured but simple passes he plays.
dave Posted 27 August 2006 Posted 27 August 2006 Whilst i am happy with the win won't dissect it too much one thing is apparent our central midfield partnership is whilst fairly solid no where near creative enough. I can see Johnsons role as he is a fairly effective defensive midfielder which is his role but i struggle to understand what Hughes is there for?? He would be ok as a box to box midfielder in a 3 man central midfield but in a 2 man midfield he is a waste of space, he offers nothing going foward and quite frequently slows down the pace of counter attacks. As for Tiatto i wish the bald big nosed aussie tw*t would get ate by a wallaby, Porter highlighted how bad Tiatto was in 5 mins and did impress me. I would stick to our strengths and attack even more utilising Hume in midfield (he played there at Tranmere) at least Fryatt would get some service that way. I would line up with the following: Logan (henderson is dire) Kenton Mccarthey Kisnorbo Nils (there is no one else) Low Hume Wesolowski Porter O'grady Fryatt This team could tear any team in this divison to pieces and could be improved further with a proper left back perhaps Sheehan could do it?

Thracian Posted 27 August 2006 Posted 27 August 2006 I think that, even as strikers, Hume and O'Grady have the energy to supplement midfield and that encourages midfielders to break forward more too. In some ways, together with Porter's inclusion. that was why we looked our most dangerous in attack during a part of the second half. There was more attacking ability and everyone knew they'd be properly covered if they did break forward. Just a pity the finishing was so shabby.

Another vital thing with Porter is that he is so disciplined in keeping the team shape. Several times yesterday Tiatto drifted into midfield and completely stiffled the space leaving O'Grady, when he won possession, looking for the wide pass and finding no-one there. That's rarely the case with Porter, time after time he offers the outfield ball and is so aware he makes the team further space by passing first time to a supporting colleague. I'm not sure I'd be pessimistic about Weso just yet. It'll take time to completely rebuild his fitness and confidence, but there is no doubt we need someone with speed, strength and passing accuracy in central midfield. We've no-one doing the job properly right now.

Hume will never play in midfield. He may play on the wing. But there is no way Hume is better than our centre midfielders. Plus whats wrong with AJ? He's doing a cracking job doing all the work no one else wants to do. So maybe it should be AJ and Weso? With Williams to come on if we're struggling to break someone down.
