Ric Flair Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 According to today's Merc, Sunderland have put a bid in for him and it was turned down yesterday. They could be coming back with an improved offer though. Thoughts?
Knighton Matt Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 From thebluearmy.co.uk... Leicester City are resisting a strong approach from Sunderland for young prospect Richard Stearman. The Wearsiders have, I understand, had a sizeable offer for the England Under-19 international turned down yesterday. And even if City's Championship rivals increase their bid before this evening's transfer deadline, they are still likely to fail. This is great news for City boss Robert Kelly, who has been concerned that he could be forced to sell some of his best young players to ease the club's financial worries. The significance is that the board seem prepared to back Kelly's team plans after the City boss said recently that his young squad represents the future of the club. Sunderland, now under the charge of Roy Keane, had earlier been involved in a bid for another City defender, Alan Maybury, but that came to nothing. The move for Stearman, City's Young Player of the Year for last two seasons, is thought to be linked to Keane appointing Tony Loughlan as his head coach. Loughlan was one of the coaches in the City academy system through which Stearman rose to a fully fledged member of the first-team squad. Stearman, 19, was the subject of summer speculation about a move to the Premiership so the approach from Sunderland comes as a surprise. He made his City debut in October 2004 against Cardiff, scoring his first goal at the end of that season at home to Millwall. While City declined to comment on Stearman, they also fear that strike pair Iain Hume and Matty Fryatt will be targets from other clubs. So Kelly faces an anxious day, hoping the principle applied to Stearman will be repeated. City have already cleared the decks, as those Kelly rated surplus to requirements - Patrik Gerrbrand, Joe Hamill and Mark de Vries - have left the club. Winger Momo Sylla initially came into that category but is now considered a full member of this season's squad. For City's part, there are no plans to make any signings today because Kelly has no funds available. The two-week break for the international matches means City have some breathing space before their return to action at West Bromwich Albion a week on Saturday, and if City go into that match with their squad intact, Kelly will be delighted.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 According to today's Merc, Sunderland have put a bid in for him and it was turned down yesterday. They could be coming back with an improved offer though. Thoughts? How many of our right-backs do they want? Hands off Kenton! Interesting that Keane must rate him. Although it's probably mostly off the say-so of Tony Loughlan. I think he will come good again soon and his value will rocket once he moves to centre-back permanently.
OBO Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 I don't want him to go because despite his poor start to this season I think he's definitey a good player to have in the squad, even if it is cover for Kenton at RB. That said a big enough offer is going to be pretty hard to turn down
Knighton Matt Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 If the offer is ridiculous then I don't see why we shouldn't accept. However it would have to 'ridiculous' i.e. way over the odds for us to accept as we don't even have time for RK to use the funds with the transfer deadline rapidly approaching. I suspect knowing Sunderland it'll be quite a measly offer though. In which case big no thanks!!

Master Fox Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 I wish Sunderland would **** off! I knew that letting our academy coach go up there would cause these problems from the stupid northern arse wipes to try to come in and unsettle our best youngsters. Loughlan, Keane & Quinn are a bunch of nob suckers

Its a good point that, he may not be the only one of our youngsters Sunderland may attempt to table a bid for today. No deal for Stearmen should be accepted, we should make it perfectly clear we have one right back up for sale and his name is Alan Maybury, special Deadline day price of 750,000 pounds
Ric Flair Posted 31 August 2006 Author Posted 31 August 2006 Stearman wouldn't want to go anyway, he'll only go to a premiership club unless the club literally do what they did to Piper and say he doesn't have a choice but it doesn't sound like the board are desperate to sell.

I wouldn't be so sure Ric. Not saying it's a done deal he'd go but let's face it he'd be on more money, playing in front of bigger crowds and the chance to link up with the guy who's been training him up since he was a nipper. Let's be honest given our current financial situation there's more chance of Sunderland being in the Premiership sooner than us despite their awful start to the season.

I've spoken to people who know Stearman and apparently he's more than happy to stay here and obviously if premiership clubs come in for him and we accept then he'd probably go but he's not interested in leaving yet. Same with Fryatt.

Having said that, he has been dropped recently and footballers are proud bastards. He might fancy playing for Keane in a 48,000 seater stadium...... just being devil's advocate, y'know. Just seen above points, sorry - slow response.

dandannieldanok Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 I say we sell him if a club has put in a substantial offer. Before the start of the season I would have said no but Kenton has performed well above my expectations!

Before the start of the season I would have said no but Kenton has performed well above my expectations! Yes, but his form could change again and he could become the player we all thought he was going to be. Form is temporary, class is permanent. If we do sell, it should be for a very good price, like the Connolly deal. If we got over £2 million then we could seriously transform the team with 3 or 4 good players.
chili_con_carne Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 Surely we have to try and get rid of the likes of Hammond and Sylla today aswell
Ric Flair Posted 31 August 2006 Author Posted 31 August 2006 Surely we have to try and get rid of the likes of Hammond and Sylla today aswell Would be nice.
dandannieldanok Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 Surely we have to try and get rid of the likes of Hammond and Sylla today aswell Hammond won't go, however RK inferred that Sylla will go if an offer comes in by saying: "He is our player until we hear different." One problem, who will bid for him.

One problem, who will bid for him. Thats a statement, I'd think any offer anywhere near the amount we paid for him would be accepted in a instant.
dandannieldanok Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 Thats a statement, I'd think any offer anywhere near the amount we paid for him would be accepted in a instant. Possibly but I don't think RK will be as willing as us the fans, he has figured a few times in the first 11 and seems to be in his plans.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 If Hammond goes today it would be a massive vote of confidence in Louis Dodds. Personally I think there's about a 0.000000001% chance of a) someone wanting him and b) Kelly suddenly rating Dodds enough to let him be 4th choice striker.
Stevosevic Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 Sorry to say everyone but i dont think we will be involved in any transfer activity today.
dandannieldanok Posted 31 August 2006 Posted 31 August 2006 Sorry to say everyone but i dont think we will be involved in any transfer activity today. TBH i would be quite happy, like RK said yesterday, if nothing happened. We don't want last years fiasco where we were forced to rush into signing Hammond and Hume (although this turned out to be a good buy).
