Ric Flair Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 My opinion of McCarthy keeps changing, I get the feeling he's going to fall just that bit short to ever be classed as a good footballer. His passion and determination should mean he'll always get by, but is he ever going to be premeirship class like Kisnorbo and with hard work Stearman will become?
Finn Claw Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 Paddy is good enough for this league, if you cut out his unneccesary fouling and he learns a bit more composure both on and off the ball then he could make the step up. He is pretty young himself don't forget so still has a lot to learn. our defense should get better all season as they all learn to play together. LB and CM are far more of a worry
Ultra Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 From what I've seen to date this season, I believe he's still some way short of the finished article. But bear in mind that the likes of Walsh, Elliott and Taggart didn't reach their prime until they were approaching 30 (or in Walshy's case had passed it). So it may be premature to pass judgement just yet.
Babylon Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 He has the ingrediants to be a good player... he isn't there yet.
breadandcheese Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 I think people are pretty harsh on Paddy Mac. He is essentially a boy learning his trade. In the normal course of a career, with a normal club (don't think you could ever describe Leicester as normal), he would be learning his trade alongside an experenced defender. Only at Leicester would we say get out there and actually lead the defence. The only way he can learn therefore his trade is by making a few mistakes. If you want to judge him, ask whether he has improved in 2 years time.
OBO Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 I never understood why people rated him originally, I thought he was inconsistent and hot headed. I thought he improved no end up towards the end of last season, and I'm now pretty much of the mindset that him and Paddy K are as sturdy a central defensive partnership as we're likely to be able to put together in this league.
Wils Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 Im undecided on Paddy. He blows hot and cold,he does make some decent challenges and is commited but i do think he makes to many mistakes and goes to ground to easily.
dandannieldanok Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 He is good enough at this level but whether he can lead us to a higher level like the poll asks is a totally different matter.
lookwhaticando Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 Yes. Mostly. Just wish he'd cut down on the silliest of his tackles, and stop his occasional aimless hoof up the field.
DaveyJ Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 Undecided. I'm sure he's good enough for this league, but he is still inconsistent and I don't think he is as good as Kisnorbo.
Stuliasz Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 I think Paddy is an excellent defender for this division, certainly when you look at what other sides in the division have and the alternatives considering our current state. He has passion, is a bit rash sometimes but has had some excellent games for us.
Head Honcho Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 He's ok for this division but if/when we are promoted I doubt he'll have the neccesary improvement in him needed Premiership football. I could be wrong, and hope I am, but somehow I doubt it.

He's going to be a superstar one day - I say so!

He's going to be a superstar one day - I say so! My only doubt with McAuley is his age. I mean he's nearly 27 and he's not even a regular in this division. He must be at the peak of his ability by now and somehow you think he's going to be a star for us in the Premiership.

Unless they are one of Sylla, DeVries, Maybury etc.
ithuriel Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 you look back at walsh at his age and you have a very similar player , in fact walsh would pick up more straight reds and he never liked a bit of bully
Guest Gist Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 I rate him for him to fit in a Leicester team so quickly like he has and to become captain so quick from playing for was it Man City reserves? he still has alot to come I think.
ithuriel Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 mcauley is a newcomer so its a case of wait and see i guess. i dont rate andy johnson at the moment but im going to give him some time too. joey G. when he came here wasnt much in his first half season but he grew in strength after that and last season was our best midfield player with some inspired play and super goals.
Southern Fox Home Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 Yes yes yes He is quality. A leader amongst a load of sheep. He still has a lot to learn but that will come with games and experience.
potter3 Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 I think he is good enough to take us up but not to keep us there
Anish Posted 1 September 2006 Posted 1 September 2006 Yes yes yes He is quality. A leader amongst a load of sheep. He still has a lot to learn but that will come with games and experience. Agreed. What do people expect in McCarthy? He has his flaws but he's an honest, 100% player who gives his all. If he cut down on his silly fouls (and bookings) and didn't give the ball away so much, he'd be a classy defender who would be out of our league! I get the feeling Leicester fans just love to whinge about one thing or another - we've just won 3 games on the spin (all featuring McCarthy), keeping 3 straight clean sheets, and yet fans have to find somebody to castigate.

I don't think he's being slagged off! All I've read is people giving their honest opinion of him. Like you said he's a good honest pro, but you have them in every division, it doesn't make him a worldbeater.
