davieG Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 Quartet set to get run-out in Leicester friendly By James McMath Manager Billy Davies is set to include four members of Derby County's first-team squad in a behind-closed-doors match at Leicester City today. Paul Boertien, Richard Jackson, James Meredith and goalkeeper Steven Cann are likely to be involved in a private friendly with the Foxes. The rest of the Derby squad will be made up of Academy players. Because of the international break, the Rams do not have a competitive fixture until the trip to Plymouth Argyle on October 15. Derby do not have a reserve team and Davies said today's game would help the quartet in their bids to reach full fitness. "It's good that we have been able to choose to have a friendly because some of the players need it," said Davies. "We don't have a reserve team, so this is a chance for some of the players to get a game. "We're lucky to have been able to arrange the game - it's come at a good time for us with the international break. "Jacko has only played about 120 minutes in the last six or seven games and Paul Boertien has only had 90 minutes all season. "We only have 16 fit players in the squad and some of them need more work to get match-fit."
Thracian Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 Sounds as if increasing numbers of clubs are struggling to keep their squads fit through having no reserve team to play them in. Not a word yet about who might be turning out for us.

Manwell Pablo Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 One for the kids to stay out of then if they've got any sense and any choice..... I dont think you'll see many, they have the academy games to keep them fit, we may see Dodds in the squad.
Thracian Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 I dont think you'll see many, they have the academy games to keep them fit, we may see Dodds in the squad. Do you think he can still recognise a football?
Manwell Pablo Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 Do you think he can still recognise a football? If he's not good enough to get in the team or attract a loan move anywhere then thats his own fault.
Thracian Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 If he's not good enough to get in the team or attract a loan move anywhere then thats his own fault. While Hughes and Johnson are in our team he's good enough and some. But if you're right, no problem. Get rid of him. Don't ruin his career.

lookwhaticando Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 Gradel got a run out (and scored - from a Levi Porter cross!). Billy McKay replaced Asaba - and also scored. Twice. If the answer isn't Gradel, I'm not sure I understand the question. Why play Porter though? Seems a bit odd - he's had plenty of games latetly. I'll not bother pretending I understand our team selection for the game, but Gradel scored (again) and that's gotta count for something.

lookwhaticando Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 Funnily enough, that is correct. Well done Manwell.
Manwell Pablo Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 Funnily enough, that is correct. I know, I passed my Maths GCSE.
Bert Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 A strong Leicester City reserve side completed a convincing 3-1 victory over Derby County at the Belvoir Drive training ground on Tuesday afternoon. The Foxes squad contained a mixture of youth and experience, with Rab Douglas, Richard Stearman, Alan Maybury and Gareth Williams all named in the starting line up. And City boss Rob Kelly also used the fixture to take a look at striker Carl Asaba and midfielder Gareth Farrelly, who are both currently training with the club on a non-contract basis. After a goalless first half it was Derby who broke the deadlock ten minutes into the second period. But City hit straight back - second half substitute Max Gradel cleverly collecting a 40-yard Levi Porter cross-field pass before charging into the Derby penalty area and hammering the ball home in one swift movement. Billy McKay, who had replaced Asaba in the 70th minute, gave City the lead when he pocked home from clse range with 10 minutes of the game remaining. And the Walkers Academy Youth striker was on hand again to flash home a 25-yard drive to secure the victory at the death.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 I know, I passed my Maths GCSE. Well I suppose you had to be revising for something while you were completely ignoring English.
lookwhaticando Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 I know, I passed my Maths GCSE. When did you get your GCSEs? I got mine in 2001 and they always tried to tell me 7+5 was 12. I wasn't having any of it. I'm wondering if GCSE's are getting better (you got yours post-2001) or worse (yours pre-2001)
Babylon Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 Looks like Kelly was having a look at gradel playing with a few "first teamers". Wouldn't be suprised to see him in the squad for the next game. The lad's on fire.

Wouldn't be suprised to see him in the squad for the next game. The lad's on fire. He's scoreing record seems unbelivable. I've seen WBA and Cov's accademy recently, both were dire. The former got battered by a team that only stayed in the confernce because other teams dropped out or got relegated for breaking laws. However Gradel is scoreing in every game from the right wing. Surely 10 mins cant hurt.
gatesheadfox Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 Cov's accademy are they all 40 and under players?
Mark Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 It'll be criminal if he isn't involved in the next game now, I don't know a player who has put in the amount of performances on such a regular basis as Gradel has and has continually been left out the squad. We've even got a major problem at right wing, which makes it even more shocking.
Ric Flair Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 I wonder whether us being kicked out of the reserve league has helped in our complete domination of the academy league? I know we only just missed out on winning the academy league last season, but we really seem to have stepped it up this season. Scoring a shit load of goals. Last season our youngsters were playing an academy game on the saturday and then a reserve game against tough opposition 2 or 3 days later. Gradel deserves a chance, never known a midfielder score as many has he has in youth and reserve football for us. McKay is bollocking them in aswell. Asaba and Fat Farrelly can fluff off.
Thracian Posted 3 October 2006 Posted 3 October 2006 Porter feeding Gradel for a first time goal - that's the sort of football we want. And there's Billy McKay keeping up his virtual goal a game record. He's got a lot skill that lad. Anyway, for all that, what I want to know is why the hell people like Asaba and Farrelly are occupying places that signed people could do with. Surely we're not serious about signing either of them.
