"60% of the UK market is illegal fireworks that do not conform to any UK safety standards" [standard Fireworks spokesman, Radio5live]

In Colombia anyone can buy anything ~ and New Year is spectacular, resplendent with fireworks...but the New Year brings with it a catalogue of injuries and disasters.

In Ecuador, they have banned the public sale of fireworks entirely - they too have massive displays and the sky is awash with colour...but with drastically lower injury figures.

How many years have to go by here where little tossers can use fireworks as weapons with impunity?

The display at Edgbaston is cheap and excellent, I wouldn't do it at home anymore.

Humans will always do stupid things - buy dodgey fireworks and strap them to their skateboard for example. Its their own fault. Get your fireworks from Tesco and put them in the ground, light them, and leg it like everyone else. FFS. Don't spoil my fun!

It's a shame all the idiots can't be locked in a disused warehouse and given all the fireworks and matches they want to play with.

Personally, I don't mind anyone playing with fireworks as long as they're not near me, Mrs. DB, my kids or my house.

They get right on my tits.

Ban 'em from supermarkets etc and restrict their use to licenced public displays - Ill never understand why people feel the need to piss away their hard-earned on crappy home displays when they can go to organised events.

But NW, you're such a killjoy! It's only a bit of fun?

Yeah, I am, and no, it's not - not when its anywhere near me. Frig off.

For that... you deserve it.

What have you learnt?

I deserved nothing of the sort! I loved that jacket and I was still determined to wear it because I convinced myself the hole burnt into the front of my puffa wasn’t that big.

Oh sod it then. Ban them, ban them all - and hang 'em high, anyone that is seen with one in public. Stick sparklers in their eyes and Catherine Wheels up their bums.

Some people might actually enjoy that!

The Iraq/Afghanistan wars are killing and maiming thousands. It isn't a safe place to be. Why not do something really useful and ban that instead of pissing about with people's traditional enjoyments. If we all sit still and do sod all then we'll get ill and crippled from the inertia. Labour has always made an art form out of nannying and they're getting worse.

It's not fireworks per se I have a problem with. It's the idiots who decide to have a fireworks party to celebrate the anniversary of their Aunt Bessie's successful haemorrhoidectomy that piss me off. Especially when it was the 25th June, and they can't set them off until 12.01am. Or the idiots who intentionally throw fireworks around the place.

Because of the ever increasing number of idiots in society, we have to have a nanny state.

Agreed their are more important things going on in the World and yet some want to ban Fireworks. The Trouble is that in the past we only had Bonfire Night on which to set off Fireworks but now we have Diwali which seems to go on for weeks before November 5th. I don't see any problem in families holding their own displays as long as they are sensible. The real problem is the yobs who throw fireworks are animals and people and set them off late at night or early in the Morning. The sale of Fireworks needs to be restricted to stop this happening and anybody selling fireworks to kids needs to be locked up with the yobs they sell them to.
